Nutrition Experts Compare Coconut Milk to Cow's Milk

While coconut milk is creamy, flavorful, and plant-based, does it really offer health advantages over cows milk or other non-dairy options like almond or oat milk? Nutrition experts weigh in on its benefits and drawbacks.

  • Lauren Manaker, M.S., R.D.N., L.D., Registered Dietitian
  • Jessica Crandall Snyder, R.D.N., Medical Advisor at FuturHealth

Different Forms of Coconut Milk

Its important to distinguish between canned coconut milk, carton coconut milk beverages, and coconut water. Culinary coconut milk is thick and rich, made by blending coconut meat with hot water, resulting in a high-fat product, explains Lauren Manaker. Coconut milk beverages, sold in cartons, are diluted with water, making them lighter and more drinkable.

Nutritional Profile

One cup of unsweetened coconut milk beverage, such as Trader Joes Organic Non-Dairy Coconut Milk Beverage, contains fewer fats than canned coconut milk but more than almond or oat milk. Overall, coconut beverages are higher in fat and calories than most plant-based milks, says Jessica Crandall Snyder. Almond and oat milk typically have less saturated fat and calories, while oat milk also adds fiber and carbs for a more filling option, adds Manaker.

Flavor and Texture

Coconut milk stands out for its creamy texture and natural coconut flavor. Unlike some plant-based milks, it doesnt feel watery or bland, making it a popular choice for those who are lactose-intolerant, allergic to dairy, or following a vegan diet.

Unsweetened Options Are Preferable

Unsweetened coconut milk beverages provide natural sweetness without added sugars. Choose minimally processed, unsweetened options with short ingredient lists, ideally just water, coconut, and added vitamins or minerals, advises Snyder.

Fat Content: Pros and Cons

Coconut milk contains more saturated fat than skim or reduced-fat cows milk. However, it is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which can be quickly converted into energy and may support metabolism and brain function. It also contains lauric acid, known for potential anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite these benefits, its saturated fat can still raise LDL cholesterol, so moderation is key.

Fortification Matters

Most coconut milk beverages are fortified with vitamins and minerals that natural coconut milk lacks. Without fortification, coconut milk misses important nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, protein, and iodine, which are crucial for bone and brain health, explains Manaker. Cows milk naturally provides these nutrients in higher amounts.

Comparing to Cows Milk

Coconut milk can be a suitable choice for those avoiding dairy or preferring its taste. However, it is not a robust source of calcium, vitamin D, or protein unless fortified, and it has more calories and saturated fat than skim milk or some other non-dairy alternatives.

Bottom Line

Coconut milk beverage can be part of a healthy diet, but with caution. Opt for fortified, unsweetened versions and enjoy it in moderation rather than as your sole milk alternative. It works well in smoothies or with breakfast cereal but may not be ideal as an everyday staple.

Author's Analysis: Coconut Milk in Perspective

Coconut milk offers a unique creamy texture and natural flavor that sets it apart from other plant-based alternatives. However, from a nutritional standpoint, it presents both advantages and drawbacks. Unsweetened, fortified coconut milk beverages can provide energy through medium-chain triglycerides and lauric acid, but they remain higher in saturated fat and calories than almond or oat milk.

Compared to cow's milk, coconut milk is low in protein and naturally lacks key nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and iodine unless fortified. For those avoiding dairy, it is a viable option, but it should not be relied upon as the primary source of essential nutrients.

The best approach is moderation and careful selection. Choose unsweetened, minimally processed, fortified coconut milk beverages to enjoy its flavor without excessive calories or sugars. It works well as an ingredient in smoothies, coffee, or cereals, but relying on it as a daily staple requires attention to overall nutrient balance.
