A recent study on human brain development has identified four critical milestones in the growth of the human brain. These key ages are nine, thirty-two, sixty-six, and eighty-three. According to the study, this means humans can remain in an adolescent-like phase until they reach thirty-two years old.

Adulthood Arrives Later Than Previously Thought

The study, published in Nature Communications, analyzed 4,000 brain scans spanning participants from childhood up to 90 years of age. Researchers examined brain development extensively and found that humans pass through five distinct brain phases, with four being particularly significant due to noticeable development, plateau, and decline.

The Five Brain Phases

  • Childhood: Birth to 9 years, marked by rapid brain growth and structural rewiring.
  • Adolescence: 9 to 32 years, a prolonged period where the brain continues maturing and becomes more efficient.
  • Adulthood: 32 to 66 years, when intelligence and development stabilize, marking the start of true adult functioning.
  • Early Aging: Begins at 66 years, showing initial signs of cognitive and structural decline.
  • Late Aging: Begins at 83 years, when the brains adaptive capacity significantly decreases.

The study indicates that intelligence and overall brain development peak around age 32. Factors such as puberty, personality stabilization, brain reorganization, and gradual decline contribute to moving from one phase to another.

Childhood: Peak Brain Activity

During childhood, the brain experiences the highest level of activity and structural changes. These processes gradually slow down with age and largely diminish by the time a person reaches their eighties.

Extended Adolescence

The research emphasizes that adolescence extends far longer than previously assumed, lasting until the early thirties. This phase allows the brain to mature fully, improving organization and efficiency. The study also notes that cultural, historical, and social influences play a role in when a person transitions into adulthood, making it a context-dependent process rather than purely biological.
