School shut down because of norovirus epidemic

A middle school in Somerset has temporarily shut down after a norovirus outbreak affected both students and staff. Danesfield Middle School, located in Williton, Taunton, announced the closure and stated that lessons will be delivered online for the day.

The school has not disclosed the exact number of pupils or staff who have fallen ill but emphasized that the closure is intended to "stop the virus from spreading further." A spokesperson added, "Closing the school will give us the opportunity to conduct a thorough cleaning and interrupt the transmission of the infection."

Somerset Council's public health department has been approached for comment on the situation. According to NHS guidance, norovirus is a contagious stomach illness that typically causes vomiting and diarrhea. Additional symptoms can include fever, headaches, abdominal pain, and muscle aches, with most individuals recovering within two to three days.

Parents and guardians have been urged to keep children at home if they show any symptoms of the virus. The school stated that updates regarding the closure will be shared with parents through its usual communication channels. "We are grateful for the understanding and cooperation of our families and the community during this period," the spokesperson added.
