Cara Marrs, a registered dietitian nutritionist at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, notes: For some, peppermint provides significant relief from gastrointestinal distress, though for others it may trigger reflux. There isnt a universal solution.

Relief Beyond Digestion

Peppermint can also alleviate headaches and muscle tension. Applying a drop to the forehead can help, as the cooling effect enhances blood flow and eases tight muscles. The same principle applies to menstrual cramps when applied to the abdomen. Research from 2013 by Iranian scientists found peppermint oil also relaxes airway muscles.

Peppermint tea provides similar soothing effects, offering a gentle alternative to the concentrated oil.

Safety Considerations

Peppermint oil should not be applied directly to the skin undiluted, as it can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Pregnant women are advised to avoid essential oils during the first trimester due to potential risks. Most adults and children over 12 can safely take peppermint oil capsules, typically experiencing only mild side effects.

For those seeking a safer option, a cup of peppermint tea or even a peppermint candy can provide similar digestive and calming benefits.
