The active compound, menthol, acts as a natural antispasmodic on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract."
Menthol works by relaxing the muscles in your stomach and intestines, which may ease cramps and spasms and allow trapped gas to move more freely, reducing bloating. Drinking a cup of peppermint tea after a large meal can be soothing for your digestive system. However, those with GERD or acid reflux should be cautious, as peppermint can relax the lower esophageal sphincter and potentially worsen symptoms.
