The White House disclosed on Monday the results of Donald Trumps recent comprehensive executive physical after the former president admitted on Sunday evening that he was unsure which part of his body had undergone an MRI scan. Trump, the oldest president in U.S. history, had the procedure during an unexpected semiannual physical on October 10 and addressed questions from reporters on Air Force One while returning to Washington, D.C., following Thanksgiving in Florida.
The announcement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the 79-year-olds cognitive and mental health. Trump asserted that he had excelled in prior brain function tests, saying, It was just an MRI. What part of the body? It wasnt the brain because I took a cognitive test, and I aced it.
On Monday, the White House released a memorandum from Sean Barbabella, the U.S. Navy captain who serves as Trumps physician. The document noted that the president had advanced imaging because men in his age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health.
According to Barbabella, President Trumps cardiovascular imaging is perfectly normal. There is no evidence of arterial narrowing, heart or vessel abnormalities. The heart chambers are normal in size, vessel walls appear healthy, and there are no signs of inflammation or clotting. Overall, his cardiovascular system shows excellent health.
His abdominal imaging was also reported as perfectly normal with no acute or chronic issues. The summary emphasized that this level of detailed assessment is standard for an executive physical at President Trumps age and confirms that he remains in excellent overall health. The report did not specify whether other areas of the body were examined with imaging.
MRI scans of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system are commonly used to detect neurological conditions such as stroke, tumors, or degenerative diseases. Trump had previously been vague about the scan during his October visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the visit as a routine yearly checkup, despite Trump having had his annual physical in April. In November, he stated, I have no idea what they analyze, but whatever they analyze, they analyzed it well and they said that I had as good a result as theyve ever seen.
The disclosure of the results comes amid criticism from political opponents. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat and 2024 vice-presidential running mate, questioned Trumps mental and physical fitness on NBCs Meet the Press, highlighting the presidents confusion over the MRI scan.
The former president has continued to post politically charged messages on his Truth Social platform, including commentary targeting Democratic figures and repeating unverified allegations. His posts have included controversial remarks about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Senator Mark Kelly.
Author's Analysis: Trump’s Executive Physical and Public Perception
The release of former President Donald Trump’s comprehensive executive physical provides a detailed look at his current health, particularly his cardiovascular and abdominal systems. According to Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, Trump’s imaging results show “perfectly normal” cardiovascular and abdominal health, with no signs of arterial narrowing, vessel abnormalities, or other chronic conditions. This confirms that, from a medical standpoint, he remains in excellent overall health for a man of his age.
Despite these findings, public and political discourse has focused on Trump’s uncertainty regarding the MRI scan he underwent. While he confirmed that the scan was not related to cognitive function, questions persist about transparency and clarity in communicating medical procedures to the public. The emphasis on routine physicals and imaging may be medically standard, but it has become politically salient amid ongoing scrutiny of his cognitive and mental health.
Trump’s continued engagement in political messaging, including posts on Truth Social and commentary on Democratic figures, highlights that his health status does not appear to limit his public or political activity. The memorandum confirms physical wellness, yet the broader discussion will likely continue around perception, mental sharpness, and public confidence.
