Oliver, a seven-year-old from Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, who was diagnosed with bone cancer earlier this year, has been selected to switch on the town's Christmas lights. The event will take place at the Market Square this Sunday.

Last Christmas, Oliver and his family spent the holiday season in Birmingham Children's Hospital due to a suspected infection. In January, he received a diagnosis of Osteosarcoma.

Oliver's mother, Laura, expressed her excitement for the upcoming lighting ceremony but described the past year as "horrendous" and admitted the family is still coming to terms with the diagnosis.

The Ross Town Council reported receiving an overwhelming number of nominations for their "switch-on star." Oliver was ultimately chosen by Christmas Fayre sponsors REHAU, Taylor Wimpey, and Dawley's, who praised his courage, saying: "His bravery and resilience through bone cancer treatment at such a young age have been remarkable. After spending last festive season in hospital, we hope this opportunity to turn on the town lights brings him a joyful holiday experience."

A council spokesperson emphasized that inviting a local hero instead of a celebrity or politician is "a wonderful way to support our community." They added, "The Switch-On Star initiative helps unite people and share festive spirit in a meaningful way."

Oliver has been undergoing chemotherapy since January and had surgery on one leg in July. His mother confirmed that recent test results are positive, stating he is now on a maintenance phase lasting until late March or early April.

Olivers sister, Lily, will join him on stage for the lights switch-on. She said, "I get to see him press the big button. Last year, it didnt feel like Christmasit just felt like a normal day."

The Ross Christmas Fayre will take place on High Street this Sunday, 30 November, from 11:00 to 17:00 GMT, with the lights being turned on at 16:30.

Oliver's Triumph: A Symbol of Hope for Ross-on-Wye

The choice of seven-year-old Oliver to switch on the Christmas lights in Ross-on-Wye is a heartwarming moment for the local community. Despite his ongoing battle with bone cancer, Oliver's courage and resilience have made him a symbol of strength and hope. His journey from spending last Christmas in a hospital bed to standing on the stage with his sister this Sunday is a testament to his family's determination and love.

While the past year has been difficult, with Oliver enduring intensive treatment for Osteosarcoma, his positive test results signal a hopeful future. The Ross Town Council’s decision to focus on a local hero rather than a celebrity for the lighting ceremony further strengthens the community's spirit. By honoring Oliver, they celebrate not just his bravery, but the strength of the entire town in the face of adversity.

This year's lighting event at Market Square serves as more than just a holiday tradition; it's a moment of collective joy and support for a young boy who has touched the hearts of many. As the community gathers to witness Oliver press the switch, the light shining from the town’s Christmas tree will symbolize not just the holiday season, but also the resilience of those who overcome life's toughest challenges.
