In Fairfield Ohio the local Boy Scout troop faced a major setback when their trailer was stolen taking seven thousand five hundred dollars worth of camping gear but the community quickly rallied raising funds and donations to replace the lost equipment in time for upcoming trips
In Fairfield, Ohio, a local Boy Scout troop experienced a substantial setback when their trailer was burglarized, resulting in the loss of camping and cooking equipment valued at approximately $7,500. The stolen items included tents and other supplies for which the scouts had been raising funds for over a year.
The Incident
Scoutmaster Roger Noe of Troop 902 described the situation as initially unbelievable, stating that he hoped it was a joke when he first learned of the theft. On April 1, Noe was notified that the troop’s trailer, which had been parked outside the Optimist Club building in Fairfield, had been forced open and nearly all contents removed. Some of the missing items, such as a 20-pound propane tank and several lanterns, were later located in a nearby ditch. Noe indicated that the thieves likely entered the property through a gap in the bushes, which allowed them to avoid being seen.
Effect on the Scouts
The theft had a significant emotional impact on the scouts, who had been anticipating their first major practical experience with the troop. Noe noted that the children were confused and disappointed, questioning why their group had been targeted in such a manner.
Upcoming Trips and Gear Needs
The stolen equipment was essential for the troop’s planned activities. Troop 902, which includes 20 members, had upcoming trips scheduled to Twin Creek in Germantown, Ohio, and later to Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Each scout is required to bring their personal gear, making the loss of communal equipment a serious challenge for preparation and participation.
Community Support and Fundraising
The community quickly responded to assist the troop in replacing the stolen gear. A GoFundMe campaign, started by Scoutmaster Noe’s wife, aimed to raise funds to cover the loss. The fundraiser exceeded its initial goal of $7,500. Additionally, the Optimist Club contributed $3,000, and further donations from residents brought the total raised to nearly $8,000 as of April 8.
Official Statements
As of April 8, neither the Fairfield Police Department nor the Optimist Club had provided public comments regarding the burglary.
Conclusion
Despite the initial disruption caused by the theft, Troop 902 has received considerable support from the local community. This assistance has allowed the scouts to acquire new equipment in time for their upcoming trips. The incident underscores both the challenges that youth organizations can face and the readiness of communities to offer support during difficult situations.
