Ella Purnell Felt Uneasy During One BTS Moment in Yellowjackets Season 2

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Showtime's series *Yellowjackets*.

Watching the life of a stranger unfold before you can feel surreal, as if glimpsing a distorted reflection of your own life. Sometimes, it might seem like a harmless curiosity, but other times, it can be deeply unsettling. This feeling is something *Yellowjackets* star Ella Purnell experienced firsthand while filming the second season of the show.

The Tragic Fate of Jackie

In the first season of *Yellowjackets*, Purnell's character, Jackie, faces a tragic end. After an intense argument with her best friend Shauna, Jackie succumbs to the freezing cold. Her lifeless body is later placed on a funeral pyre, and as it burns, the starving survivors, driven by desperation, resort to the unimaginable—cannibalizing their deceased friend. This shocking and brutal event marks the end of Jackie's story in Season 1.

Although Purnell’s character was no longer active in the plot of Season 2, the actress still had a presence in the series, appearing as a ghostly figure haunting Shauna. Even though Purnell was not involved in the main storyline, the production team kept her in the loop, sending her scripts as she worked on her other major project, *Fallout*, for Amazon Prime.

The Unsettling Experience of Seeing Her Charred Body

In a revealing interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Purnell shared an unsettling behind-the-scenes moment that left her uneasy. While working on *Fallout*, she received unexpected messages from her *Yellowjackets* co-stars. These messages included photos and selfies featuring her charred and burned body, used for the scenes depicting Jackie's corpse.

"I was actually really slow at reading the script," Purnell recalled. "They would send me the scripts for Season 2, even though I wasn’t necessarily in it. I was filming *Fallout*, and I was very overwhelmed, so I was being really slow with reading them. And then, out of nowhere, I got all of these texts and selfies from the *Yellowjackets* cast with my charred corpse. In a weird way, it really did look like me, even though you can't really see any details. It was just her charred body, but it’s my body. So, it was mostly funny, but it was also a little bit disconcerting and a little odd."

Purnell’s Initial Reaction to Jackie’s Death

When Purnell first auditioned for *Yellowjackets*, she knew that Jackie’s character would meet a tragic end. However, as she grew closer to her castmates during the early stages of filming, she found herself hoping for a different outcome. "I knew with my first audition," Purnell explained, "I was pretty cautious about TV, and so, at the time, that seemed really appealing. But then, when we started filming, I didn’t want to die."

This led her to approach the show’s writers in the hope of extending Jackie's storyline. She hoped to give her character more time with the others, but the writers ultimately confirmed that Jackie's fate was sealed. "They thought about it," Purnell remembered. "And then they called me and were like, 'She's got to go. We tried. We did our best.'" Despite her attempts to save her character, Jackie's shocking death and subsequent consumption by the survivors remains one of the most brutal and unforgettable moments in the series.

The Challenge of Being on the Outside

Though Purnell’s time on *Yellowjackets* had come to an end, she admitted that watching the series from the outside was a challenge. "It was tough to be on the outside of the show while it blew up," she confessed. "But I don’t have any regrets. We really formed such a close bond, partially because of the very intense scenes that we did. So we got really, really close, and it was hard [not to be there]. I definitely missed them, and I got serious FOMO."

Reunion and Closure

Fortunately, Purnell was given the chance to briefly return to the *Yellowjackets* set, albeit in a ghostly form. Jackie's spirit continued to haunt the survivors in Season 2, providing Purnell with a chance to reconnect with her co-stars for a short time. This brief reunion allowed Purnell to experience the camaraderie of her *Yellowjackets* family once more. "It scratched the itch," Purnell said of the reunion. "It gave me closure to say goodbye to *Yellowjackets* and fully commit to *Fallout*."

The brief return to the *Yellowjackets* set gave Purnell the closure she needed, allowing her to fully focus on her role in *Fallout*, a project that would go on to achieve significant success when it premiered in 2024.

Jackie’s Legacy

Although Jackie’s physical presence is no longer part of *Yellowjackets*, her legacy continues to live on in the memories of the survivors who will never forget the ultimate price they paid for survival. The horrific reminder of what they were forced to do in order to survive—the cannibalization of Jackie's body—lingers in their minds. Despite her departure from the series, Purnell remains grateful for the experience and the lasting friendships she formed with her co-stars.

"It was such a meaningful experience," she said. "I’ll always cherish it, even as I move on to new projects."
