He also shared a personal anecdote, stating, “I enjoy coming in here. He just makes you feel special. I probably get my hair cut every two and a half weeks. As you can see, over the years, it’s not a lot up there, but he still keeps it tight. You get more than just a haircut or a curl or whatever the style. It’s family.”

Jeremiah White: A Passion for Barbering and Community

The new barber school is being launched by Jeremiah White, also known as Jerry, a local entrepreneur with deep roots in Grand Rapids. White’s connection to the barbering and salon industry goes back to his childhood, as both his aunt and uncle were involved in the business. His aunt owned a salon, while his uncle ran a barbershop, which inspired his passion for the craft. White, who was born and raised in Grand Rapids, explained, “I love this. It’s an experience that’s part of our history. It’s generational.”

To emphasize the strong cultural ties to barbering, White pointed to a mural created by local artist DeAnthony Carter. The mural, which is displayed outside the suites, captures the rich history and significance of barbershops and salons within the Black community of Grand Rapids. White believes that the new barber school will play a key role in preserving this tradition while introducing a new generation to the profession.

From Education to Barbering

White’s career path into the beauty industry was not linear. Initially, he pursued a career in education, but his passion for cosmetology eventually led him to make the switch. Reflecting on his career shift, White said, “I got there and I was like, ‘There are my cousins. Those are my people.’” Despite his enthusiasm for the field, White was surprised to discover the lack of barber schools in Grand Rapids. “For Grand Rapids to be the second-largest city in Michigan, you would think there would be a barber school here, but there’s not,” White remarked. He explained that many local barbers are actually trained as cosmetologists rather than formally trained barbers. As a result, aspiring barbers in Grand Rapids often have to travel to Lansing or Kalamazoo to attend one of the few barber schools in the state.

Filling the Gap in Barber Education

With over 30 years of experience in the beauty industry and more than 20 years of managing Reflections Salon & Suites, White is now focusing his efforts on education. His new venture will be the first barber school in Grand Rapids, slated to open this spring. White hopes the school will help students build confidence in their abilities and develop their natural talents. “If you build confidence in people and work on the gifts that God gave them, they’re going to soar,” he said, emphasizing the importance of nurturing students’ potential.
