Mads Mikkelsen reveals "Rogue One" script was incomplete: 'I don't believe they finalized a draft'

Actor Mads Mikkelsen revealed that the script for Rogue One was never fully completed before filming began, with the story evolving constantly on set, creating a unique and unpredictable experience for the cast while still delivering a compelling final film.

Actor Mads Mikkelsen recently opened up about the behind-the-scenes process of creating Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, offering surprising details about the development of the screenplay. According to Mikkelsen, the script for the film was far from finalized during production, with the story constantly evolving as the film progressed.

In his interview, Mikkelsen shared that the narrative for Rogue One was always in a state of flux, with new revisions being made as the cameras rolled. Rather than following a fixed blueprint, the film's story developed organically, constantly shifting and adapting. Mikkelsen described this process as a "restless, unfolding improvisation" that kept the films narrative in a state of constant change, without ever truly settling on a final form.

He explained that the script for Rogue One was never fully completed before filming began. "The script always seemed to be on the edge of completion," Mikkelsen said, "but it was never fully finished. I dont believe they finalized a draft before we started shooting." This revelation stands in contrast to the meticulous world-building and detailed planning that is often associated with major Star Wars films. Given the franchise's history of expansive, interconnected narratives, Mikkelsen had expected a more solidified script going into the production.

However, as production moved forward, the storyline for Rogue One continued to evolve, which proved to be both a challenge and a unique experience for the cast and crew. Mikkelsen admitted that the constantly shifting script created a sense of uncertainty, making the entire project feel like an ongoing work in progress. Yet, despite these challenges, the actor emphasized that the final product exceeded expectations.

Although the script was never fully polished, Mikkelsen found that the changes ultimately enhanced the film. He stated that the film's core remained strong and intact, and even though the script was evolving throughout production, the final result felt complete and satisfying. "The layers of change beneath the surface hadnt diminished the films core," he explained. "It blossomed into something much more subtle, radiant, and ultimately satisfying." Despite the ongoing script revisions, Mikkelsen believes that the film's story came together in a way that was both compelling and cohesive.

Reflecting on his time working within the Star Wars universe, Mikkelsen acknowledged the unpredictability of the process but also expressed his satisfaction with how everything turned out. He emphasized that while the script may have been incomplete during filming, the collaborative effort and adaptability of the team helped bring Rogue One to life in a way that surprised even him. In the end, the film achieved a balance between its evolving nature and its final, polished form.
