Two men were convicted for making more than one hundred fake emergency calls in the West Midlands wasting over one hundred thousand dollars of public resources and putting real lives at risk authorities warn against such malicious actions
Two men have been convicted for causing a series of false emergency calls, resulting in over $100,000 in public resources being wasted. Zaynul Shaffi, 44, and Shahid Khan, 31, were found guilty of intentionally creating a public nuisance. Their actions flooded emergency lines in the West Midlands with fabricated crises, disrupting the response to actual emergencies and putting lives at risk.
At Birmingham Crown Court, Zaynul Shaffi was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the scheme. Shahid Khan, however, was deemed unfit to appear in court and will receive his sentence at a later date.
Over the course of 18 months, Shaffi and Khan initiated 122 false emergency calls, creating a barrage of fake incidents. These included reports of gunshots in the streets, staged homicides, and even a fabricated tale of a newborn abandoned on railway tracks. Their calls overwhelmed the emergency services, drawing heavy police and emergency resources to non-existent threats.
One of the most significant false alarms involved a claim of a newborn left on railway tracks. The fabricated report led to the deployment of nearly twenty police vehicles and thirty officers to the scene. The lie was later traced back to a personal dispute, where one of the men had discovered that his wife was unfaithful. Evidence revealed that the men communicated via multiple devices to conceal their identities and discuss the police response.
During one of the fabricated incidents, Shaffi, using a disguised voice, spoke to Khan, who was located at a different address. Shaffi, under the pretext of being a concerned citizen, urged Khan to ensure that aerial surveillance was conducted by the police helicopter hovering over the supposed emergency scene. This bizarre request for photographic evidence added another layer to their complex scheme.
Detective Sergeant Ross Somerfield, who was involved in the investigation, described the calls as "very serious and sinister," emphasizing that they had caused considerable disruption. “These false reports diverted essential resources from genuine emergencies, putting lives at risk,” he stated. According to him, the aftermath of the incident was a clear illustration of how the digital world can be used for malicious intent, tracing the culprits through a trail of digital footprints.
Police Superintendent Sally Simpson also issued a strong statement, warning the public that prank calls to emergency services are not harmless. "They can have real-world consequences and may delay our response to critical incidents. These calls are not just a waste of time, but they can jeopardize lives," she stated.
The consequences of Shaffi and Khan’s actions are a stark reminder of the gravity of misusing emergency services. Their false reports caused a significant strain on public resources, preventing law enforcement from responding to real emergencies promptly. The legal repercussions of their actions are still unfolding, with more details to be released when Shahid Khan’s sentence is handed down.
