The family of Lilia Valutyte, tragically murdered in Boston, has honored her "beautiful spirit" and strong character. The 9-year-old, fatally stabbed in July 2022, is remembered with heartfelt tributes, including a statue and memorials in Boston, as her family faces the deep pain of her loss.
The family of Lilia Valutyte, the young girl tragically murdered in Boston, Lincolnshire, has paid tribute to her "beautiful soul with a strong character," celebrating her lively personality and the deep impact she had on their lives.
Tragic Incident
Lilia Valutyte was fatally stabbed on 28 July 2022 while playing outside a shop where her mother, Lina Savicke, was working. The assailant, 26-year-old Deividas Skebas, was later convicted of her murder in a trial at Lincoln Crown Court. Skebas, previously living on Thorold Street in Boston, confessed to killing Lilia but denied the charge of murder, arguing that his mental state had reduced his responsibility for the crime. However, the jury dismissed this defense and found him guilty. Skebas remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on 25 February.
Family Remembrance
Lilia's mother, Lina Savicke, reflected on the memorials dedicated to her daughter’s memory. She shared that the family has a statue of Lilia at their home, which captures her in her final moments, playing with a hula hoop. In addition to this, a memorial bench and a mosaic have been set up in Boston to commemorate Lilia's life. Lina expressed the immense emotional burden the family has faced since the tragedy:
"Tears and pain cannot wash away everything we feel."
"It is deeply painful to live through something whose consequences someone never truly thought through."
"Sometimes terrifying thoughts overwhelm the mind. Yet, as a family, we stand strong, supporting each other through every low point and every wound."
"Simply tired of tears. Of constant overthinking. The child will not return. Why her? Why us?"
Last Moments and Family Grief
Lilia’s stepfather, Aurelijus Savickas, recounted the final moments he shared with her. He described the experience of dropping Lilia off outside her mother's shop. She hugged him and said goodbye, a moment that became their last memory together. He reflected on the enduring sorrow caused by her loss:
"I have attended many funerals in my life, but nothing prepared me for losing a child."
"There are no words to describe that pain. It left scars on our hearts that will never fully heal."
"Some emotions fade with time, but the memories remain, and the love never disappears."
"She was a beautiful soul with a strong character and strong personality."
"Lilia, you will always live in our hearts. You are forever loved."
Case Developments
Deividas Skebas is set to be sentenced on 25 February following his conviction for Lilia's murder. During the trial, the court considered his claim of diminished responsibility due to mental health issues, but the jury rejected it. The sentencing will bring closure to the legal proceedings, though it will not erase the pain felt by Lilia's family.
Memorials in Boston
The local community has joined the Valutyte family in honoring Lilia's memory. Along with the statue at the family’s home, the memorial bench and mosaic in Boston serve as permanent tributes, providing a place for reflection for anyone wishing to remember Lilia.
Impact on the Family
The Valutyte family has emphasized the importance of supporting one another as they navigate the ongoing emotional challenges following Lilia's tragic death. While they continue to cherish her memory and the moments they shared, they also acknowledge the profound and lasting pain her absence has left behind. Lilia's story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the deep, enduring love of a family mourning the loss of an irreplaceable child.
