Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reassured the public that everything is fine after an unexpected Situation Room visit, emphasizing confidence in U S leadership and ongoing operations despite a tense global environment and rising oil prices
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was unexpectedly summoned to the White House Situation Room during a live Sky News interview on Thursday, an interruption that drew significant attention. The call occurred abruptly, with an aide entering the broadcast and saying, "Sorry, the president wants you right away." Bessent quickly detached his microphone, told journalist Wilfred Frost he might "work that in," and left for the Situation Room. He did not return for nearly two hours.
Upon his return at 12:07 p.m., Frost addressed the unusual interruption. When asked about the president's demeanor, Bessent, appearing hesitant, stated, "The president is in great spirits. The Iranian mission is proceeding well ahead of schedule." Despite his extensive experience in hedge fund management, Bessent struggled to articulate his sentences smoothly during the exchange.
Bessent also shared personal remarks, mentioning his own family. He noted that he has a teenager considering military service and expressed full confidence in U.S. military leadership, including the President and Secretary of Defense, saying he would trust his child's life to them.
This situation occurred amid heightened global tensions. Key developments include U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28, which resulted in over 1,300 Iranian fatalities, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Leadership transitioned to Mojtaba Khamenei, who declared the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed. Approximately 20% of global oil passes through this strait, which has seen near-total disruption. Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel, and gasoline prices increased by 17% since the onset of the conflict. Iranian military forces and the IRGC have threatened and attacked commercial vessels associated with the U.S. or its allies, with multiple ships struck in the Persian Gulf, including three incidents shortly before Bessent returned to the interview.
When asked about the Situation Room meeting, Bessent offered minimal details, stating discussions covered a "plethora of things." On the possibility of U.S. Navy escorts for oil tankers through the strait, he responded cautiously, indicating such action would occur "as soon as it is militarily possible."
Regarding financial implications, Frost inquired if there was a threshold at which the U.S. would consider the conflict unaffordable. Bessent, responsible for managing the country's finances, replied firmly, "Absolutely not," emphasizing there is no defined limit despite market volatility, rising gasoline prices, and oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel.
Public response to Bessent’s statements has been varied. His reference to his teenager drew attention online, with the video clip accumulating hundreds of thousands of views. Analysts and viewers are divided: some view his remarks as a demonstration of confidence and support for national leadership, while others interpret them as an attempt to project calm in the face of concerning developments. Regardless, the episode has become one of the most scrutinized moments of the administration’s ongoing conflict, with Bessent’s tone and demeanor offering insights beyond his words.
Bessent is married to John Freeman and has two children, Cole and Caroline, who attend school in England. His remarks about his teenager’s potential military service highlight the personal dimension of his statements during this critical moment for global security and U.S. financial policy.
