In Surrey, the blue tit has topped local

In Surrey, recent birdwatching results indicate that the blue tit has become the most frequently observed species, contrasting with the national pattern where the house sparrow holds the top position. This information comes from the latest survey conducted by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

National and Regional Bird Data

The RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch reveals clear distinctions between national and regional bird sightings. Across the United Kingdom, the three birds most commonly recorded are the house sparrow, blue tit, and starling. In Surrey, the survey found a different order of frequency, with the blue tit leading, followed by the wood pigeon and the house sparrow.

In neighboring regions, the pattern varies: Kent and West Sussex report the house sparrow as most frequently observed, followed by the blue tit and starling. East Sussex records the house sparrow first, then the blue tit, and finally the wood pigeon.

Guidelines on Feeding Birds

The RSPB has issued guidance discouraging the provision of seeds and nuts during the summer months, specifically from May to the end of October, to reduce the risk of spreading disease. Martin Fowlee, an RSPB spokesperson, stated that this measure is aimed at preventing Trichomonosis, a parasitic disease that affects the mouth, throat, and upper digestive tract of birds. Infected birds can experience difficulty eating, drinking, and breathing. Greenfinches and chaffinches are particularly susceptible, while other species are less affected.

Long-Term Population Trends

The Big Garden Birdwatch, carried out annually since the late 1970s, has tracked long-term changes in bird populations. Some species have shown substantial declines. For instance, song thrush numbers have steadily decreased since the survey’s inception. Greenfinches have also experienced notable reductions in population over the years. According to Fowlee, the data gathered through the survey is essential for informing conservation efforts and directing interventions where they are most needed.

Additional Recommendations

The RSPB also recommends that any water offered to birds on hot days should be replaced daily. Stagnant water can harbor pathogens and increase the likelihood of disease transmission among garden birds.

Summary of Regional Bird Observations

  • Surrey: Blue tit, wood pigeon, house sparrow
  • Kent and West Sussex: House sparrow, blue tit, starling
  • East Sussex: House sparrow, blue tit, wood pigeon

The findings highlight regional differences in bird populations and emphasize the ongoing challenges involved in supporting healthy bird communities in gardens.
