The U.S. Department of Justice has revealed that a letter allegedly written by Jeffrey Epstein to Larry Nassar is a forgery. The letter, which circulated online, contained false claims about former President Donald Trump. Forensic analysis confirmed multiple inconsistencies, including handwriting and postal errors, disproving its authenticity.

Fact Check: Examining letter Epstein reportedly wrote to Larry Nassar mentioning Trump

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has made public a letter claimed to have been written by financier Jeffrey Epstein to convicted former sports doctor Larry Nassar. The letter, which circulated online, included a statement allegedly referencing former President Donald Trump. According to the DOJ, the document is a forgery.

In late December 2025, as part of a larger release of documents related to investigations into Epstein, this letter appeared in online discussions. A screenshot showing the letters contents spread across social media platforms including BlueSky, Instagram, and Threads. The correspondence was claimed to bear a signature of Donald Trump and included text suggesting shared criminal interests between Epstein, Nassar, and Trump.

The Department of Justice clarified that the letter was not authentic. Its official statement, posted on X on December 23, 2025, highlighted that multiple sensational claims against Trump had been submitted to the FBI prior to the 2020 election. The DOJ confirmed that these allegations lacked any factual basis. Despite the claims being false, the DOJ emphasized transparency by releasing the documents while protecting the identities of Epsteins victims.

Details of the Alleged Letter

The letter in circulation had several anomalies indicating it was not genuine. The return address listed "J. Epstein, Manhattan Correctional, NYC," which did not correspond to Epsteins actual detention facility. The envelope contained a Virginia postage stamp, inconsistent with Epstein's known location in New York. Additionally, the postmark was dated three days after Epsteins death.

The full text circulated online included statements about caring for young women and referenced former President Trump. However, forensic analysis and scrutiny by the DOJ identified multiple inconsistencies, including differences in handwriting compared to verified Epstein samples. The letters narrative contained contradictions and logistical impossibilities regarding mail handling and timing.

Official Responses and Forensic Analysis

The White House referred to the DOJ statement in response to the circulation of the letter, affirming that the claims were false. The Department of Justice further highlighted several errors in the document:

  • The handwriting did not match Epsteins known writing style.
  • The Virginia stamp contradicted Epsteins location at the time.
  • The envelope lacked essential details required for inmate correspondence, such as his register number and correct institutional address.
  • The postmark date occurred after Epsteins death, confirming that the letter could not have been sent by him.

The DOJ also requested FBI handwriting analysis to compare the letter to Epsteins verified samples. The results of this analysis have not been publicly released. Internal prison mail protocols confirm that all outgoing inmate correspondence must include the inmate's full name, register number, and correct return address, and normally, mail is processed within 24 hours. Because Epstein died on a Saturday, any mail postmarked three days later could not have originated from him.

Conclusion

The release of this document initially generated speculation and controversy. Examination by the DOJ and FBI indicates that the letter is a forgery. Its circulation demonstrates that not all documents released in public records disclosures are authentic, and claims contained within such documents require careful verification.
