In Lebanon, over 100000 people have rushed to shelters as Israeli alerts trigger mass evacuations, creating urgent humanitarian challenges and straining limited facilities amid rising tensions with Hezbollah.
BEIRUT, March 6 – In Lebanon, around 100,000 people have sought refuge in shelters amid escalating tensions, according to a senior United Nations official. The displacement is expected to rise rapidly after Israel issued "unprecedented" warnings, prompting mass evacuations across several regions.
Israel Orders Large-Scale Civilian Evacuations
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified, leading the Israeli military to implement extensive evacuation measures. On Thursday, evacuation orders targeted residents in Beirut's southern suburbs, areas controlled by Hezbollah, as well as sections of the eastern Bekaa Valley. These instructions followed similar evacuation directives issued for southern Lebanon on Wednesday. The alerts have caused widespread panic, with many residents urgently seeking safety.
Rising Displacement and Shelter Limitations
Imran Riza, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, described the situation as unprecedented in both scale and urgency. As of Friday morning, approximately 100,000 people had taken refuge in 477 collective shelters. Despite these efforts, the available capacity is rapidly diminishing, with only 57 shelters still able to accommodate additional evacuees.
Challenges of Mass Movement
The evacuation process has led to significant disruption and logistical challenges. Large numbers of displaced individuals are moving without clear destinations, creating chaotic conditions. Riza emphasized the unpredictable nature of the movement, noting that people are relocating in various directions, often without guidance. This uncoordinated displacement is expected to increase the number of people seeking shelter rapidly, placing further strain on the already limited facilities.
Historical Context and Expected Trends
Lebanon has previously experienced widespread displacement during the 2024 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, when over one million people were forced from their homes. At that time, around 75-80% of the displaced population did not use official shelters. Observers suggest that the current situation may follow a similar pattern, with most displaced individuals likely staying outside formal shelters, complicating humanitarian responses and planning.
Humanitarian Concerns
The continuing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is causing substantial displacement in Lebanon. The UN's humanitarian operations are struggling to meet the growing demand, as shelters approach full capacity. Rapid evacuations and an unpredictable increase in displaced persons raise concerns about Lebanon's ability to manage the crisis effectively in the coming days.
