Recent social media posts falsely claim celebrities donated millions to aid victims of a deadly school airstrike in Minab Iran These misleading stories exploit public interest in the tragedy while spreading clickbait and misinformation online

Fake Clickbait Claims Celebrities Backing Victims of Iran School Attack

Authorities in Iran have reported that more than 150 individuals lost their lives in a recent airstrike targeting a school in Minab, located in the southern Hormozgan province. While official investigations into the incident are still underway, social media has seen a surge of misleading posts falsely attributing large charitable contributions to prominent celebrities and athletes for the benefit of the victims. These claims, largely clickbait in nature, appear designed to exploit public interest in the tragedy while leveraging celebrity names for increased engagement.

Viral Fabrications on Social Media

One of the earliest and most widely circulated posts appeared on Facebook on March 1, 2026. The post falsely asserted that American Olympic figure skater Ilia Malinin had donated his entire $10 million in bonuses and sponsorship earnings to support emergency relief and medical aid for the victims of the school strike. The content included a fabricated quote purportedly from Malinin stating, "I've seen the reports about those innocent children in the south, and I promised myself that if I ever had the chance to help those caught in the crossfire of this war, I would step up." The post also displayed an image of Malinin alongside graphic visuals of debris and damaged buildings.

Following this initial claim, similar posts quickly emerged attributing identical donations and quotes to other high-profile figures, including tennis player Coco Gauff, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, and WNBA athlete Sophie Cunningham. Musicians such as Eminem, Britney Spears, Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, Post Malone, and Neil Diamond were also falsely listed as contributors to aid the victims. No credible sources confirmed any of these pledges or statements.

Context of the Airstrike

The Minab school attack occurred shortly after a series of military strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026, which reportedly led to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. These events provoked mixed reactions internationally. However, neither the United States nor Israel has confirmed responsibility for the school airstrike. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the Pentagon is investigating the incident. AFP (Agence France-Presse) has not been able to independently verify the reported fatalities or access the site directly.

Misinformation Related to the Conflict

The ongoing Middle East conflict has produced widespread online misinformation. AFP has previously identified posts that falsely claim to show footage from the war. The fabricated narratives involving celebrity donations to Minab school victims represent a continuation of this pattern. Searches for credible reporting on the alleged contributions show no evidence supporting the claims.

Clickbait Trends and Artificial Intelligence

These misleading social media posts are part of a broader trend of clickbait, where celebrity names and images are used to attract attention and drive traffic. Many of the posts originate from networks outside the United States, including operations based in Vietnam, which are known for creating viral content through coordinated content farms. Analysis of Facebook page transparency indicates that several accounts sharing these posts are linked to these networks. The posts often include homoglyphs—characters that appear normal but are encoded differently—suggesting the use of artificial intelligence in generating and distributing the content.

Attempts to Verify the Claims

AFP contacted representatives for Sophie Cunningham, Eminem, and Cardi B for confirmation regarding the alleged donations. No responses were received, reinforcing the conclusion that the posts are entirely fabricated. This case aligns with prior incidents where AI-generated content was employed to mislead audiences and manipulate social media users. Such technology allows rapid dissemination of false information with minimal oversight.

Conclusion

While the airstrike in Minab remains a tragic and ongoing investigation, reports claiming that celebrities have provided large donations to assist the victims are false. These claims are part of a persistent trend of online disinformation exploiting sensitive events to elicit emotional reactions and drive engagement. Users are advised to approach social media posts on this subject with caution and verify information through credible sources before accepting or sharing it.
