Iran's new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, faces a turbulent political landscape as his loyalist base weakens amidst growing internal dissent and external pressures. Despite his control over key institutions, public support is diminishing, raising doubts about the stability and future of the Islamic Republic.
The internal structure of Iran's political authority is experiencing significant instability as the country’s new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumes power following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His ascension occurs amid intense external pressures, including recent U.S. actions, and growing unease within Iran's own borders, casting uncertainty over the stability and loyalty sustaining the Islamic Republic.
Mojtaba Khamenei, chosen by a hardline clerical council, maintains substantial influence over the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and their extensive business networks. State-controlled media presented his appointment with visible displays of celebration, portraying a united public reception and projecting nationwide support for the new leadership. However, independent interviews with Basij militia members, ordinary citizens, political analysts, and insiders indicate that the regime’s core support has contracted significantly compared to previous decades.
Political analyst Ali Ansari observes that appointing a hardliner was intended to consolidate loyalist backing, yet the actual support base remains limited and increasingly fragile. Iran's political system, originally established in 1979 as a response to popular demand, has over decades faced internal erosion caused by perceived betrayals, misappropriation of resources, broken promises, and suppression of dissent. Despite this, a dedicated group of loyalists continues to engage actively in elections, public demonstrations, and suppression of opposition, demonstrating continued commitment to the regime’s survival.
Among loyalist supporters, individuals like Zahra Mirbagheri, a 21-year-old citizen, publicly advocate for the new leader, reflecting a small but visible segment of ideological dedication. Similarly, long-standing Basij members, such as Rastegari, express willingness to risk their lives for the continuity of the revolution and the principles espoused by the Khamenei leadership.
Simultaneously, Iran faces mounting external threats. Former U.S. President Donald Trump explicitly rejected Mojtaba Khamenei as a candidate for supreme leader, and Israeli officials have indicated intentions to target the office’s occupant, intensifying regional insecurity. These pressures exacerbate internal fractures and amplify public unease regarding the sustainability of the leadership structure.
Recent elections illustrate a cautious shift among the Iranian populace. Sixteen million citizens voted against hardline candidates, signaling reduced public support for uncompromising ideologies. Candidates representing more measured positions, though still minority figures, garnered notable voter support, indicating ideological diversification and a gradual move away from entrenched hardline dominance.
Within the country, ordinary citizens express concerns about ongoing conflict, government repression, and limited avenues for resistance. Businessman Babak from Arak highlighted that, while the Guards and regime forces remain influential, ordinary Iranians face constraints in challenging authority or affecting meaningful change.
The Basij militia and affiliated loyalist networks operate extensively across Iran, extending from central offices in Tehran to local neighborhoods and rural communities. These structures provide organized control, uphold ideological loyalty, and coordinate public demonstrations and commemorations for the previous leader, Ali Khamenei. While some participants are motivated by ideological conviction, others remain bound to the regime by pragmatic incentives, including access to higher education, employment opportunities, and financial support. However, growing economic challenges threaten these incentives and introduce uncertainty among loyalist ranks.
Basij member Hassan from Mashhad expressed concern over the regime’s resilience under sustained U.S. pressure and the impact of recent airstrikes on critical infrastructure, including airports and ports. Such disruptions contribute to internal unease and challenge the stability of the regime’s support network.
As Mojtaba Khamenei begins his tenure, Iran confronts a combination of internal dissent, declining public support, external military and political pressures, and economic strain. While loyalist networks remain operational and organized, the shrinking base of public backing poses significant risks to the Islamic Republic’s continuity. The intersection of these pressures presents a critical test for the new leader and the survival of Iran’s political system, leaving the nation’s future uncertain and its stability precariously balanced.
