Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner faces backlash after praising a video showing Hamas fighters killing Israeli soldiers in 2014, sparking widespread criticism and raising concerns about his judgment and suitability for public office.

A Senate candidate from Maine, Graham Platner (D), is under intense scrutiny after publicly expressing approval for a video depicting Hamas fighters killing Israeli soldiers during a 2014 cross-border raid. The video, titled "Helmet Footage from Hamas Cross-Border Raid," shows a violent confrontation in which at least five Israeli soldiers were killed. Platner’s comments about the video appeared on his now-deleted Reddit account, drawing widespread criticism.

The footage highlights the tactical actions of Hamas during the raid, showing a coordinated attack against Israeli forces. Platner, on the forum r/CombatFootage, which focuses on military and conflict recordings, described the raid in highly favorable terms. He characterized the operation as “a miniature triumph,” emphasizing his admiration for the strategic execution of the assault despite its violent content. Platner defended the raid’s actions, explaining that small unit operations are typically intended to inflict casualties and capture prisoners quickly, framing the event as a “masterful execution” against a stronger force.

The controversy surrounding Platner intensified due to the presence of a Totenkopf tattoo on his body, a symbol historically linked to German military units and the Nazi regime. Platner told NBC News that he anticipated criticism for his Reddit posts but did not expect reactions regarding his tattoo, which he has had for over two decades. He stated that the tattoo has been visible through multiple security clearances and emphasized that he has consistently opposed Nazi ideology.

Further public backlash emerged from Platner’s past statements and actions. He deleted a tweet in which he expressed support for neo-Nazi figure Stew Peters, defended a Marine who urinated on dead soldiers’ bodies, and argued that survivors carry responsibility for their own protection. These actions have compounded concerns about his judgment and sensitivity toward vulnerable groups. Despite repeated inquiries, Platner’s campaign has not issued public responses regarding these controversies.

Overall, the scrutiny of Graham Platner’s candidacy underscores the ongoing debate about his past remarks, endorsements, and personal conduct. While he has expressed regret over some past actions, such as removing the Totenkopf tattoo, multiple incidents have prompted questions about his suitability for public office. As the election progresses, Platner’s campaign is expected to face continued examination of these contentious matters.
