Shooting at Israeli consulate in Istanbul leaves one dead and two injured

In Istanbul, a shooting incident near the Israeli consulate resulted in the death of one gunman and injuries to two others, according to statements from Turkish authorities. The event took place in the Besiktas district, a prominent business area of the city, during daylight hours.

Details of the Attack

Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci reported that two police officers were slightly wounded during the confrontation with the attackers. Authorities stated that the assailants had traveled from Izmit to Istanbul using a rental vehicle. Among the attackers, two were confirmed to be brothers. The gunman who was killed has been identified as Yunus E. S., with a reported affiliation to a terrorist organization described by the ministry as one that "exploits religion," a reference thought to relate to the Islamic State group, although no organization has officially claimed responsibility for the incident.

Injured Attackers and Police Officers

The two surviving attackers were identified as brothers Onur and Enes. The two police officers who sustained injuries were reported to be in stable condition, with wounds to the leg and ear. Governor Davut Gul clarified that only one attacker had been killed, correcting earlier reports that suggested two assailants had died. During the assault, the attackers employed both rifles and pistols.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities confirmed that "intensive digital communication" was detected among the three neutralized attackers. Interrogations of the injured individuals are ongoing. Investigators continue to collect evidence and examine communications connected to the attack to determine the full extent of the plot.

Security Measures and Consulate Status

Following the attack, police vans were deployed to the area, and the vicinity around the consulate was cordoned off for several hours. No Israeli diplomatic personnel were present at the consulate, which has remained unoccupied for approximately two and a half years due to strained relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv over the Gaza conflict. Video footage circulated on social media showed one armed attacker being shot by police and falling to the ground, while witnesses reported that gunfire continued for 15–20 minutes.

Official Statements

The Turkish justice minister confirmed that an official investigation into the shooting has been initiated. Authorities are continuing to gather intelligence and assess the situation to identify any further connections or threats related to the incident.

Summary

  • One gunman killed: Yunus E. S.
  • Two attackers injured: Onur and Enes (brothers)
  • Two police officers slightly injured
  • No Israeli diplomatic staff were present at the consulate
  • Ongoing police investigations with interrogations of surviving attackers

The incident underscores continuing security concerns in Istanbul and demonstrates the active response of Turkish authorities to armed attacks targeting diplomatic locations.
