Smotrich says Northern residents will not be evacuated following Hezbollah attacks

Israel's Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, announced on Monday that the government has decided not to evacuate residents of northern communities despite the rising tensions on the Lebanese border. The decision was made amid the ongoing military campaign, Operation Roaring Lion, which is aimed at addressing the security threat posed by Hezbollah.

This decision comes in the wake of a recent rocket attack launched by Hezbollah at Israel. The attack marked the group's participation in a broader regional conflict that also involves Iran. Smotrich confirmed that the Israeli cabinet held a meeting overnight and resolved that, unlike in previous conflicts, the residents of northern Israel would not be relocated from their homes. The resolution is a key part of the strategy during Operation Roaring Lion.

According to Smotrich, the government believes that Hezbollah's actions will have consequences. He emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are taking significant measures to protect civilians while continuing to engage with Hezbollah forces. Smotrich highlighted that the IDF is actively operating on the front lines and is conducting operations deep within Lebanese territory to target Hezbollah positions.

One of the key points raised by Smotrich was that while military forces are intensifying their actions against Hezbollah, they are also focused on ensuring the safety of Israeli civilians in the north. He reassured residents that the IDF is committed to ensuring their security while also taking necessary steps to neutralize the threat posed by Hezbollah.

The announcement follows an incident on May 17, 2024, when rockets were launched from Lebanon towards northern Israel. The attacks added to the ongoing tensions and hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. The escalation has caused significant disruption for communities in northern Israel, particularly those near the Lebanese border.

The security situation in northern Israel has been increasingly unstable since the attack on October 7, 2023, which was carried out by Hamas. This attack led to a broader regional conflict that severely affected daily life, especially for residents in the north. During the previous escalation in 2024, many northern communities were forced to evacuate due to the constant rocket fire targeting their areas.

The prolonged conflict caused extensive damage to infrastructure and homes in several towns along the northern border. Many of these communities are still in the process of recovering from the damage. Despite the ongoing security threats, the government has made efforts to rebuild and restore these areas.

Last month, the Israeli government approved a comprehensive, multi-year rehabilitation plan designed to assist communities along the northern border that were severely impacted by the conflict. The program will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, homes, and providing support to residents who are still recovering from the destruction caused by the violence. The rehabilitation plan is a crucial part of the government's strategy to restore stability to the region.

The government's position on avoiding evacuations signals a shift in policy compared to earlier stages of the conflict. Instead of relocating civilians, the government is focusing on maintaining their presence in the affected areas while ensuring that military operations continue to address security threats. This approach aims to minimize disruption for residents and help facilitate long-term recovery in the region.
