President Donald Trump signals potential talks with Iran while emphasizing U S control over the Strait of Hormuz as lawmakers weigh further troop withdrawals in a move aimed at stabilizing regional tensions and advancing diplomatic efforts.

President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States may soon reengage in diplomatic negotiations with Iran. Government officials have suggested that discussions could resume within the next several days, reflecting ongoing concerns about regional security and military presence.

Ceasefire Extension in Progress

Mediators have reported that both the United States and Iran have tentatively agreed to extend the existing ceasefire for at least an additional two weeks. This ceasefire, initially set to expire next week, is considered a critical measure to maintain stability in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump, in a Fox News interview, described the potential talks as imminent, possibly taking place in Pakistan. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also noted that negotiations are "highly probable." Trump expressed optimism about resolving the conflict, asserting that the war is "close to over" and highlighting the strategic significance of the U.S. withdrawal.

U.S. Military Secures Maritime Control

The U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces have established full maritime control over the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that a blockade has been implemented, affecting trade routes to and from Iran. Within the first 24 hours, six vessels were instructed to turn back, five of which were carrying oil shipments.

Eric Swalwell Resigns Amid Assault Allegations

Former Representative Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., resigned following new accusations of sexual assault. Lonna Drewes accused Swalwell of drugging and assaulting her during a 2018 hotel meeting in California. She recounted the incident during a Beverly Hills press conference, explaining how she became incapacitated after consuming a single glass of wine. Swalwell has denied all allegations, calling them false. His resignation was formally submitted to the House clerk, and he is no longer a candidate for California governor.

Congressional Expulsion Efforts Continue

Following Swalwell’s resignation, lawmakers including Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.), and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) indicated potential additional expulsion votes. The cases under review involve Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) and Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.), both of whom face ongoing investigations and legal charges but have denied any wrongdoing.

Justice Department Seeks Vacatur of Jan. 6 Convictions

The U.S. Justice Department has requested that courts vacate the convictions of twelve members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers connected to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, including individuals convicted of seditious conspiracy. This action follows previous pardons and sentence commutations issued under Trump, with the DOJ asserting that continuing prosecutions is "not in the interests of justice."

Federal Reserve Investigation Faces Legal Barriers

Federal prosecutors investigating a multi-billion-dollar renovation project at the Federal Reserve have encountered obstacles. The inquiry into Fed Chair Jerome Powell was blocked when a judge denied subpoenas, citing insufficient evidence of criminal conduct. Legal representatives emphasized the importance of adhering to court procedures, while the Department of Justice continues to monitor cost overruns in the project.

Artemis II Mission Concludes Successfully

The Artemis II mission ended with a safe splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. U.S. Navy personnel recovered the four astronauts from the capsule, transferring them to the USS John Murtha for medical evaluation. The 10-day mission covered approximately 700,000 miles and included lunar observations. Preparations are underway for Artemis III, focusing on orbital operations and docking practice with a commercial lunar lander. Artemis IV, scheduled for 2028, aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo 17.
