Vice President J D Vance is strengthening ties with top billionaires as he prepares for a potential 2028 presidential run leveraging his role as RNC finance chair and hosting key fundraisers to secure strategic support from influential GOP donors
Vice President J. D. Vance is actively cultivating relationships with influential billionaires as he prepares for a potential 2028 presidential campaign, leveraging his position as the Republican National Committee (RNC) finance chair. His leadership of the RNC's fundraising efforts has enabled him to strategically strengthen alliances with the party's wealthiest backers.
Under Vance's oversight, the RNC's finances have become a focal point for directing resources. A subtle shift in donor loyalty has emerged, with some high-profile contributors focusing attention on the potential of Vance's future campaign rather than any immediate candidate. Multiple fundraisers hosted or attended by Vance have reinforced these connections with top GOP donors.
In addition to his official RNC duties, Vance has expanded his influence through the Rockbridge Network, a donor group he co-founded. High-profile figures, including Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, participated in a Rockbridge Network event in March 2025, further cementing Vance's reach among prominent investors.
Although he is not currently fundraising directly for his own campaign, an arrangement with the RNC ensures that a portion of small-dollar online donations supports Vance's political action committee, Working for Ohio. Approximately five percent of RNC contributions are allocated to this committee, bolstering his financial base in anticipation of a future run.
Several billionaires have notably aligned themselves with Vance:
- Miriam Adelson: The widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, recognized as a leading GOP donor.
- Sergey Brin: Google co-founder, contributed $443,000 to the RNC and attended a Vance fundraiser in 2025.
- Joe Lonsdale: Palantir co-founder, hosted a fundraiser for Vance in March 2025, contributing $44,300 to the RNC.
- Elon Musk: Maintains regular contact with Vance; his donations have not yet directly impacted RNC coffers.
- Chamath Palihapitiya: Hosted a Silicon Valley fundraiser for Vance in May 2025, raising $4 million.
- John Paulson: Donated $90,000 to the RNC in November 2025, increasing his political influence and connection to Vance.
- Stephen A. Schwarzman: Blackstone co-founder, attended a dinner at Vance's residence and contributed $25,000 to the RNC.
- Paul Singer: Hedge fund magnate, contributed $443,000 to the RNC in March 2026, becoming a close ally.
- Peter Thiel: Maintains a longstanding alignment with Vance, supporting his political trajectory from Silicon Valley networks.
- Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss: Attended a March 2025 event for Vance, contributing over $1 million to the RNC.
- Jeff Yass: Susquehanna International Group co-founder, made notable contributions to the RNC, including $250,000 in February 2025.
RNC fundraising between January 2025 and March 2026 reached $225 million, providing significant support for Vance as he positions himself for the 2028 presidential election. These resources, sourced from both high-profile donors and digital campaigns, reinforce his emerging status as a leading Republican figure.
Although Vance has not formally declared a candidacy, a YouGov poll in April 2026 indicated that he remains the top choice for Republican voters, with 36% support, slightly below the 41% peak observed in January. His current focus combines managing vice presidential responsibilities with overseeing RNC finances, while gradually expanding his political network in preparation for future electoral opportunities.
The combined effect of strategic donor engagement, significant fundraising, and growing political visibility positions Vance as a prominent contender for 2028, with momentum that suggests his potential White House bid is becoming increasingly plausible.
