The city of Peterborough is set to open a new public swimming pool in September 2028, with construction starting in early 2027. The facility will feature competitive and learner pools, spectator seating, a caf, fitness suite, and soft play, offering a modern space for recreation and community activities.

Council informed that new pool is on schedule to open in 2028.

The city of Peterborough is on track to see a new public swimming pool open its doors in September 2028, with the local council planning to submit the required application by July. Zameer Ali, the Labour cabinet member responsible for communities, poverty, and public health, provided an update on the project during a budget meeting, urging councillors to support the next stages of development.

Project Timeline and Construction Plan

Ali outlined a detailed timeline for the facility. If the application receives approval, preliminary site work is scheduled to begin in October 2026. Construction of the buildings is then expected to start in February 2027. Once completed, this swimming pool will serve as the city's only public indoor swimming facility, replacing the Regional Pool on Bishop's Road, which was closed in 2024 due to structural safety concerns.

Planned Features of the New Pool

The new complex is designed to accommodate both competitive swimmers and learners, offering a range of amenities including:

  • An eight-lane, 25-meter main pool suitable for competitive events
  • A 20-meter, four-lane learner pool with a movable floor for training purposes
  • Poolside and balcony seating areas for spectators
  • A café for visitors
  • A soft play area for children
  • A fitness suite featuring 150 workout stations and multiple exercise studios

These facilities are intended to support recreational swimming, lessons, and fitness activities for a broad demographic within the community.

Funding and Economic Considerations

The project is expected to receive financial backing from multiple sources, with over half of the required funding coming from the government's £20 million Growth Mission Fund. The city council will submit a comprehensive business case demonstrating the economic and strategic value of the pool for Peterborough residents. Ali stated that the submission makes a compelling argument for investment in this key community resource.

Council Endorsement and Leadership Remarks

Shabina Qayyum, Labour leader of the city council, expressed support for the development, noting her satisfaction with the progress. She emphasized that the council has now reached a stage where it can confidently confirm that a new swimming pool will be available for the city's residents, highlighting the project's importance for public recreation and community well-being.

Design Contract and Technical Planning

During the council meeting, a contract was awarded to Alliance Leisure Services Limited to carry out the technical design work for the project. This company will develop the detailed designs, referred to as RIBA stages 3 and 4, which are critical for moving the project into construction. Awarding this contract represents a significant milestone in the facility's development process.

Future Outlook

With planning and design progressing, residents of Peterborough can anticipate a modern swimming facility ready by 2028. The pool is expected to enhance public health, provide new recreational opportunities, and serve as a valuable amenity for all ages and skill levels in the community.
