Iowa State University to Close or Merge 23 Academic Programs in Latest Purge

Iowa State University is set to close or merge 23 academic programs as part of a major restructuring to improve program sustainability and align with workforce needs affecting both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Iowa State University has announced a comprehensive restructuring of its academic portfolio as part of its Program Vitality Review. The initiative includes the termination of 10 academic programs and the consolidation or merger of an additional 13 programs across undergraduate and graduate levels. The changes were formally communicated to faculty members and administrative units by Senior Vice President and Provost Jason Keith.

The restructuring effort is connected to the Iowa Board of Regents Workforce Alignment Review, which evaluates academic offerings across Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Iowa. A key focus of the review is program viability based on enrollment thresholds, specifically undergraduate programs with fewer than 25 students and graduate programs with fewer than 10 students.

As part of the closure decisions, the university identified 10 degree programs for discontinuation. These are evenly distributed between undergraduate and graduate levels and reflect low enrollment and alignment assessments with workforce demand and institutional priorities.

Undergraduate programs scheduled for closure include:

• Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
• Environmental Studies
• Interdisciplinary Design
• Religious Studies
• Women’s and Gender Studies

Graduate programs scheduled for closure include:

• Accounting Analytics
• Energy Systems Engineering
• Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies

University leadership stated that these actions result from a structured evaluation of academic programs with persistently low enrollment. The administration emphasized that the objective is to improve long-term academic sustainability while maintaining alignment with evolving educational and workforce requirements.

In addition to closures, Iowa State University plans to consolidate 13 academic areas through mergers and structural integration across multiple disciplines, including sciences, social sciences, humanities, and applied fields.

Planned consolidations and mergers include:

• Doctoral programs in Applied Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, and Nuclear Physics combined into a single Ph.D. program
• Sociology and Rural Sociology merged into one graduate program
• Earth Science and Geology programs combined at both undergraduate and graduate levels
• Rhetoric, Composition, and Professional Communication integrated into an existing graduate program
• Gerontology merged within a program in the College of Health and Human Sciences
• Experiential Graphic Design integrated into broader bachelor’s and master’s level curricula

The university also confirmed that certain academic certificates, minors, and elective courses in affected disciplines may continue to be offered despite the restructuring of degree programs.

All changes will follow established institutional governance procedures, including departmental review, college-level evaluation, and consideration by Faculty Senate committees. Final approval will be required from the Iowa Board of Regents before implementation.

Students currently enrolled in programs identified for closure will be permitted to complete their degrees under existing academic pathways. However, once closures are finalized, new student admissions into those programs will be discontinued.

Some programs were excluded from closure despite low enrollment due to their significance in workforce development, licensing requirements, or their role as foundational academic structures. At the undergraduate level, Nursing and Interdisciplinary Studies were exempted. At the graduate level, five programs, including three in education, were also excluded from closure decisions.

In addition, several under-enrolled programs received a two-year extension for further review of enrollment trends and labor market relevance. These include undergraduate programs such as Dairy Science and Seed Science, along with more than a dozen graduate programs in areas including Animal Physiology, Anthropology, Community Development, Forestry, and Nutritional Sciences.

This restructuring reflects broader national patterns in higher education, where universities are reassessing academic offerings in response to changing enrollment patterns, financial constraints, and workforce alignment priorities. Similar restructuring efforts have been observed across multiple institutions in the United States, affecting a range of disciplines.

The current changes at Iowa State University affect both scientific and social science fields, as well as selected humanities disciplines such as Religious Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. The university stated that the initiative is part of its ongoing effort to maintain efficient delivery of its land-grant mission while adapting academic structures to present and future educational needs.
