US Navy Supercarrier to Make History with Longest Modern Deployment

With over 294 days at sea, it surpasses the previous record held by the USS Abraham Lincoln. The carriers journey spans multiple regions and operations.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the newest and largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, is on track to achieve a milestone in modern naval operations. As of Tuesday, the carrier will surpass 294 days at sea, overtaking the previous record held by the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), which was deployed for 294 days between April 2019 and January 2020. This marks the longest post-Vietnam War-era deployment for a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.

The deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford is approaching the 300-day mark, putting it within reach of surpassing the USS Midway (CVA-41)’s 332-day record set during the Vietnam War from April 10, 1972, to March 3, 1973. The Midway’s extended mission earned it a Presidential Citation, establishing a benchmark for long-term carrier operations. The current deployment of CVN-78 is historic, though it is unlikely the vessel will remain at sea for a full year.

Operations Across Multiple Regions

Since leaving Naval Station Norfolk on June 24, 2025, the USS Gerald R. Ford has engaged in multiple joint operations and exercises across several regions. Initial expectations were that the carrier would deploy to the Middle East following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Instead, the ship moved to the North Sea, visiting Oslo and participating in collaborative operations with NATO forces from late September to early October.

NATO Training Exercises

During its time in the High North, the carrier, accompanied by the USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, conducted flight operations and strike exercises in the Norwegian Sea. These exercises were coordinated with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, highlighting the operational flexibility and capabilities of the Navy’s newest supercarrier.

Mediterranean and Caribbean Deployment

After completing missions in the High North, USS Gerald R. Ford deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar on October 1. The carrier made a port visit to Split, Croatia, before being redirected to the Caribbean to support Operation Southern Spear, a U.S. drug interdiction effort. This operation also included enforcing a blockade on oil tankers linked to Venezuela. CVN-78 contributed to the success of Operation Absolute Resolve, resulting in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas.

Originally scheduled to return to Norfolk in early 2026, the carrier was redeployed to the Mediterranean to participate in Operation Epic Fury, an ongoing aerial campaign targeting Iran.

Challenges During Deployment

The USS Gerald R. Ford has faced several operational difficulties. In mid-March, a fire in a laundry room took nearly 30 hours to extinguish, causing smoke damage and temporarily displacing approximately 600 sailors. Additional mattresses were delivered from the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), which was undergoing sea trials. The ship has also encountered mechanical problems, including fraying arresting cables and saltwater damage to key systems, as well as frequent issues with clogged gender-neutral restrooms.

Fleet Capacity and Strategic Implications

CVN-78’s extended deployment underscores the limited number of U.S. aircraft carriers, with only 11 nuclear-powered supercarriers currently in service. The USS Nimitz (CVN-68), the oldest carrier, is transitioning to decommissioning but is conducting a farewell goodwill mission in the Caribbean and Latin America. With regional tensions, particularly regarding Iran, the USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to remain in the Mediterranean until relieved by the USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77). Rising geopolitical tensions could further extend CVN-78’s deployment beyond its originally planned return in early 2026.
