Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5, now streaming on Netflix.
The fifth season of Stranger Things has officially premiered in the 2025 TV lineup, and Volume 1 delivered enough content to fuel fan theories until Volume 2 arrives on Christmas Day. Beyond the major twists, there are subtle moments that could be continuity oversightsor deliberate hints of deeper storylines awaiting the characters in Volume 2.
Season 2 Callbacks Reinterpreted in Season 5
In Season 2, Episode 8, Wills loved ones shared personal stories to connect with him while he was under the Mind Flayers influence. Joyce told a tale about a rainbow spaceship he had drawn, Mike recalled their friendship, and Jonathan recounted building Castle Byers together in the woods:
"Do you remember the day Dad left? We stayed up all night building Castle Byers, just the way you drew it. And it took so long because you were so bad at hammering. Youd miss the nail every time. And then it started raining, but we stayed out there anyway. We were both sick for like a week after that. But we just had to finish it, didnt we? We just had to."
In Season 5, Episode 4, "Sorcerer," Wills flashback showed him and Jonathan building Castle Byers, but the scene removed the pouring rain, nighttime setting, and urgency to finish. The memory instead appeared as a happy bonding moment rather than a coping mechanism for parental abandonment.
Season 1 Details Shifted in Season 5
According to Stranger Things: The Complete Scripts, Season 1, Will was 12 years old in November 1983, in seventh grade. In Season 5, Episode 3, "The Turnbow Trap," Joyce incorrectly recalled her sons age during a conversation about past events:
"I think about that night all the time. The night it came for you. The night all this started. I wasnt even home. My shift ran late. When I finally do get home, what do I do? I smoke cigarettes, drink cheap wine, and watch Cheers reruns until I pass out. I didnt know you were missing for eight hours What kind of mother doesnt check on their 11-year-old boy?"
This presents another apparent contradiction, raising the question of whether these shifts are mistakes or intentional narrative elements tied to Volume 2.
Potential Explanations and Fan Theories
The changes in Castle Byers memory and Joyces age misstatement could be continuity errors, but they might also hint at Vecnas growing influence over the characters perceptions. With Volume 2 pending, fans may see these adjustments as deliberate, reflecting supernatural manipulation.
For context, Wills birthday was previously established as March 22 in Season 2, but the Duffer Brothers admitted to forgetting this date in Volume 1 of Season 4, showing that small inconsistencies have precedent in the series.
Fans are already adjusting to other timeline shifts, such as Holly Wheelers age jump from 3 in Season 1 to a more prominent role in Season 5. Continuity tweaks like these may simply fall into that category, or they could carry narrative weight related to Vecna.
Looking Ahead to Volume 2
Volume 2 of Season 5, which premieres on Christmas Day at 8 p.m. ET, will continue the final season with three additional episodes. The series finale is scheduled for New Years Eve at 8 p.m. ET, with a runtime of just over two hours. Given the popularity of Stranger Things, currently ranking #1 on Netflixs end-of-November Top 10, the conclusion promises a cinematic finish.
