Although Arnold Schwarzenegger is celebrated worldwide as an actor, many critics and fans note that acting has never been his strongest suit. His most iconic role, that of a stoic, nearly emotionless robot, highlighted both his physical presence and his limited acting range. Yet Schwarzenegger was aware of this and took proactive steps to refine his craft.

According to the 1989 book Flights of Fancy: The Great Fantasy Films, Schwarzenegger sought guidance from his Conan the Barbarian co-star James Earl Jones two years before the movie's release in 1982. Author Kenneth Von Gunden described the arrangement: "Knowing James Earl Jones' interest in maintaining physical fitness, Schwarzenegger struck a dealhe assisted Jones with workouts, while Jones coached Arnold on acting, demonstrating various ways to deliver lines effectively."

Von Gunden noted that the acting lessons yielded tangible results. While Schwarzenegger's performance in Conan did not earn awards, it was competent and suitable for the film. Critics, like Richard Schickel, considered the script itself more problematic than the acting, describing the movie as "a sort of psychopathic 'Star Wars,' stupid and stupefying." Nevertheless, Schwarzenegger's "serviceable" performance helped pave the way for his future roles.

The success of Conan directly led to Schwarzenegger landing the role of the Terminator, followed by leading parts in Commando (1985), The Running Man, and Predator (1987). Even before Terminator 2: Judgment Day, he had already cemented his status as a top-tier action star.

Physicality as the Core of Schwarzenegger's Success

Schwarzenegger also enhanced his performance in Conan the Barbarian by conducting additional rehearsals with director John Milius. Von Gunden explained, "Arnold struggled with his accent and line delivery. While the accent was manageable, he and Milius dedicated time to perfecting speech delivery. Each day before lunch, they would practice extended monologues, sometimes rehearsing forty to fifty times before filming."

Von Gunden praised Schwarzenegger's commitment and screen presence: "His work with Milius and Jones paid off, giving Conan a rare 'physical acting' style. Despite the term 'muscle-bound,' Schwarzenegger's Conan is agile and skillful with a sword, rivaled only by a few actors."

Ultimately, Schwarzenegger's physicality played a crucial role in making him one of the most bankable actors of the 1980s and '90s. He reached the peak of his career with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the highest-grossing film of 1991 despite its R rating, proving that his combination of strength, presence, and dedication could carry a blockbustereven if critics questioned his acting skills.

His partnership with James Earl Jones stands out as a pivotal moment, where Schwarzenegger combined physical strength with a better understanding of effective line delivery.

Schwarzenegger's ability to blend physicality with acting, particularly in films like Conan, Predator, and The Terminator series, became the cornerstone of his success. While his performances were often seen as "serviceable," they were more than adequate for the action-packed roles he was cast in.
