"Pillion", the provocative BDSM-themed romantic comedy featuring Alexander Skarsgard as a confident biker and Harry Melling as his shy new submissive, has claimed the top accolade at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). This marks the debut feature for writer and director Harry Lighton. The film, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year and is set for U.S. release via A24, also received the award for Best Debut Screenwriter.
These achievements add to the films earlier craft victories for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hair Design. The awards ceremony took place at Londons Roundhouse on Sunday, drawing prominent figures from the British and international film industry, including Carey Mulligan, Stephen Merchant, Ruth Wilson, Celia Imrie, and Billy Crudup.
Akinola Davies Jr.s Nigeria-set debut "My Fathers Shadow", another Cannes premiere produced by Element Pictures, led the nominations with 11 mentions but secured only the Best Director award.
In gender-neutral performance categories, Robert Aramayo won Best Lead for his role as a Tourettes campaigner in the indie hit "I Swear", surpassing competitors including Jennifer Lawrence. Rising British talent Jay Lycurgo received Best Supporting for his portrayal of a troubled student in the school drama "Steve".
The BIFAs continue to spotlight emerging talent. Cal McMau earned Best Debut Director for "Wasteman", Dhiraj Mahey was recognized as Breakthrough Producer for "Ish", and Posy Sterling took the Breakthrough Performance award for "Lollipop".

The awards once again showcased BIFA's role as a platform for recognizing both established and emerging talent across all aspects of filmmaking, from directing and producing to performance and technical craft.
Analysis: BIFA 2023 Highlights the Rise of Emerging Talent
The 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) demonstrated once again the festival's commitment to recognizing new voices in the film industry. "Pillion," the BDSM-themed romantic comedy from debut director Harry Lighton, took home the coveted Best Film award, further cementing its reputation as a trailblazer in unconventional cinema. Its triumph is a testament to the growing demand for fresh, bold narratives that push the boundaries of genre.
Notably, BIFA's emphasis on emerging talent continued to shine through in its selection of winners. While "Pillion" claimed major awards, other standout films like Akinola Davies Jr.'s "My Father’s Shadow" showed that innovative filmmaking continues to thrive, despite being overshadowed in other categories. The success of first-time directors such as Tom Basden and Tim Key, who won Best Debut Director for "The Ballad of Wallis Island," reflects BIFA’s role in elevating fresh perspectives in British cinema.
The gender-neutral performance categories also underscored the ongoing evolution in how performances are recognized. Robert Aramayo's win for Best Lead in "I Swear" and Jay Lycurgo’s Best Supporting in "Steve" mark significant milestones in diversifying the types of stories and performances that are honored in mainstream awards.
Ultimately, this year’s BIFA ceremony affirmed the festival's importance as a vital platform for both established and emerging talent, showcasing films and performances that might otherwise go unnoticed in larger, more commercial circuits.
