Warning: Spoilers for "Stranger Things" Season 5, Episode 4 "Sorcerer"
Ever since Season 4 of Stranger Things ended on Netflix in July 2022, fans have been speculating about the future of Max Mayfield, portrayed by Sadie Sink. Introduced in the second season, Max quickly became a beloved character among viewers.
During Season 4, Max struggles with intense grief over the death of her stepbrother Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery). Billy, initially a violent and intimidating figure, ultimately sacrificed himself to save Max, along with Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in Season 3. Max's grief leaves her highly susceptible to the series villain, Vecna (also known as Henry Creel, played by Jamie Campbell Bower).
While sitting by Billys grave and listening to Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" on her Walkman, Max is briefly possessed by Vecna. Despite her friends and ex-boyfriend Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) trying to intervene, Max uses herself as a trap. She dies, is revived, and falls into a coma. In Season 5, it is revealed that she has been trapped inside Henry Creel's memory palace during this time.
Max and Holly's Unlikely Team-Up
While in the coma, Max encounters Holly Wheeler and attempts to help her escape Vecna's grasp. Lucas remains by Max's hospital bedside, repeatedly playing "Running Up That Hill" in hopes of bringing her back to consciousness. Inside Henry's memories, Max can faintly hear the song, but she and Holly are still trapped in a distorted mental landscape.
As explained by Matthew Modines Martin Brenner in the penultimate episode of Season 4, every person possessed by Vecna contributes to weakening the barrier between his realm in the Upside Down and the real world. This allows Vecna to increase his power and threaten Hawkins. Season 4 ends with a massive earthquake, signaling his partial success.
In early Season 5, Holly Wheeler, Mike and Nancy's younger sister (played by Nell Fisher), becomes Vecnas next target. Initially, Holly is tricked by Vecna appearing as her "imaginary friend," Mr. Whatsit. Posing as Henry Creel, Vecna warns her not to enter the woods, but Holly discovers a map that directs her to a cave. Inside, she finds Max.
By Episode 4, "Sorcerer," Max and Holly form a team attempting to escape Henry's memory world. Max reveals that she was the "fourth and final gate" discussed in Season 4 and that Hawkins is now split in two. She explains that Henrys memory maze is confusing and nonlinear, leaving them unsure of their path forward. Max has devised a plan to escape, though she has yet to disclose it. The cave remains a safe zone within Henrys memories, the only place he cannot enter.
Looking Ahead
The first four episodes of Stranger Things 5 were released on Netflix just before Thanksgiving, with three more episodes set to air on Christmas and the series finale scheduled for New Year's Eve. While Max's strategy remains a mystery, fans can take comfort in her experience and ability to protect Holly.
Author’s Analysis: Max’s Role in Season 5 Deepens the Stakes
From my perspective, Max Mayfield’s journey in Season 5 underscores the show’s commitment to character-driven tension. Her entrapment in Henry Creel’s memory palace not only extends the trauma she endured in Season 4 but also positions her as a key player in the fight against Vecna. Max is no longer just a survivor; she has become an active strategist within the Upside Down, guiding Holly and demonstrating resourcefulness under extreme pressure.
What stands out is how the series links personal grief to supernatural vulnerability. Max’s grief over Billy’s death continues to shape her actions, making her both a target and a protector. The memory maze is portrayed as nonlinear and disorienting, emphasizing that the threat Vecna poses is psychological as much as it is physical. Her awareness of being the “fourth and final gate” elevates her importance in the overarching conflict in Hawkins.
Finally, the interplay between the real world and the Upside Down remains central. Lucas’s bedside vigil and the recurring motif of "Running Up That Hill" reinforce the connection between human bonds and supernatural intervention. Max’s plan to escape, though not yet revealed, hints at a turning point for Season 5, suggesting that the resolution will rely on both courage and strategy. This development confirms that Max is positioned as a linchpin for the series’ climax.
