‘Harry Potter’ Series Actor Dominic McLaughlin Responds To Letter From Daniel Radcliffe: “It Was Crazy”

Dominic McLaughlin, who has been cast as the lead in HBOs forthcoming Harry Potter adaptation, shared the unforgettable moment he received a personal letter from Daniel Radcliffe. McLaughlin, set to portray the iconic wizard from J.K. Rowlings novels, recounted being handed the note while traveling on a train back to Glasgow.

"It was unbelievable," he told BBCs Saturday Mash-Up! Live. "My dad just tapped me and handed me the letter. I opened it and saw it was from Dan R. I was going crazy inside but had to act calm on the train."

When asked about the filming experience, McLaughlin said, "Everything is going fantastically. Ive made really good friends, and its just wonderful to be part of this."

Daniel Radcliffe previously revealed that he wrote a note for McLaughlin. "Seeing these kids and their photos makes me want to hug them," Radcliffe shared. "They look so young, and I remember being their age on set. Its touching, and I hope theyre enjoying every moment."

McLaughlin was officially announced as Harry Potter in May and has been filming throughout the summer. The casting process was highly competitive, with 32,000 young actors auditioning for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton were chosen to play the other two main characters.

McLaughlin also appeared on Saturday Mash-Up! Live to promote the CBBC series Gifted, which centers on a group of Scottish teenagers discovering their extraordinary abilities.

Author's Commentary on the Casting of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter

The recent announcement of Dominic McLaughlin being cast as the new Harry Potter in HBO’s adaptation has been met with a mixture of excitement and nostalgia. As the actor himself shared, the moment he received a personal letter from Daniel Radcliffe, the original Harry Potter, stands out as one of the most surreal and meaningful moments in his career so far. The gesture, which took place while McLaughlin was traveling by train, was a testament to the continuity of the Harry Potter legacy, with Radcliffe offering support and encouragement to the young actor stepping into his shoes.

McLaughlin's reaction to the letter—trying to maintain composure while feeling overwhelmed—speaks volumes about the pressure and significance of portraying such an iconic character. It also highlights the camaraderie within the Harry Potter franchise, as Radcliffe, now much older, reflects on his time as the boy wizard and wishes the new cast nothing but the best. This connection between the past and present Potter actors adds a layer of warmth and authenticity to the new adaptation.

From an industry perspective, the casting of McLaughlin and his co-stars, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton, is a notable step in maintaining the magic of the franchise. With 32,000 young actors auditioning for these roles, the competition was fierce. This speaks to the continued cultural impact of J.K. Rowling’s novels and the global reach of the Harry Potter story, which remains a major touchstone for new generations of fans.

It’s clear that McLaughlin is already forming strong bonds with his castmates, and his positive outlook on the filming experience is reassuring for fans eager to see the adaptation come to life. As production moves forward, it will be interesting to see how this new iteration of Harry Potter unfolds on screen, but for now, the support from Radcliffe and the behind-the-scenes camaraderie of the cast suggests that the magic is in good hands.
