Hilary Duff has shared how being let go from a TV role at just 11 years old ultimately paved the way for her iconic role as Lizzie McGuire. Reflecting on her early Hollywood experiences, Duff revealed that she nearly walked away from show business entirely before landing the part that would define her career.
The 38-year-old actress spoke with Variety ahead of her upcoming album release, luckor something, scheduled for early next year. This marks her first album since 2015s Breathe In. Breathe Out., and Duff reflected on how her initial music experiences intertwined with her acting journey.
Her path to stardom began with Disneys Lizzie McGuire, which premiered in 2001. Duff's musical debut was on the shows soundtrack in 2002, followed by her first studio album, Metamorphosis, in 2003. That same year, The Lizzie McGuire Movie featured her songs Why Not and What Dreams Are Made of.
Discussing the audition process for Lizzie McGuire, Duff admitted, I had decided I wanted to go back to Texas and be a normal kid. She had just lost a previous role, explaining, I got replaced with twins so they could work longer hours. I got fired at 11, and it was devastating.
Despite feeling discouraged, Duffs manager arranged for her to audition for Disney. Initially unprepared, she was confronted by casting director Robin Lippin: Youre not very prepared for this. Undeterred, Duff returned the next day fully ready and off-book, impressing the casting team with her commitment and energy.
Her gymnastics skills also helped her win the role, as the character frequently showcased acrobatic moves. The show became a cultural phenomenon for preteens before ending in 2004. Duff continued acting in films such as Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen, and A Cinderella Story, while also releasing albums including Hilary Duff (2004) and Dignity (2007).
Reflecting on her early music career, Duff said, It was a mix of not fully knowing what I was doing and being thrilled to be a pop star. Though she took voice lessons from a young age, she didnt initially see herself as a singer, citing Britney Spears as an inspiration to fully embrace pop music.
Recently, Duff released her first single in over a decade, Mature, and her upcoming album luckor something is set for February 2026. She described the album title as a response to questions about how she has maintained perspective after growing up in the industry.
In addition, she is excited to revisit her old songs during an upcoming mini-tour. For the first time in a long time, maybe 15 years, I feel so excited to sing my old songs again, Duff shared, calling it a lovely victory lap to perform them in her own way.
