Let's take a trip back to 2017. Fidget spinners were everywhere, Fyre Festival made headlines, Taylor Swift released Reputation, Tom King started his run on Batman, and Fortnite took the gaming world by storm. Among these cultural moments, one TV moment stood out for its oddity: the seventh episode of Stranger Things season 2. Its widely regarded as the seasons most disliked episode, even among loyal fans.
With Stranger Things season 5 now available on Netflix, viewers were reintroduced to a character many thought they had left behind. In episode 4, "Chapter 4: Sorcerer", the heroes discover that the military has been using Vecna not just to track Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), but also another individual from Eleven's past who originated from Hawkins Lab.
Behind a locked door in the Upside Downs government facility is Eight, Elevens sister from Hawkins Lab. Known off-screen as Kali Prasad, she is portrayed by Linnea Berthelsen. Eight first appeared in season 2, debuting in the opening scene of episode 1, "MADMAX", and then starring in episode 7, "The Lost Sister".
For those whose 2017 memories are a bit hazy, heres a summary: Eight, like Eleven and Vecna, was a test subject at Hawkins Lab. Unlike Eleven, Eight can create mental illusions, making people see things that arent real, including doubles of herself or others. She can also render herself and others invisible, though it requires great effort and mental strain.
Eight returns in season 5 after an eight-year absence. In season 2, Eleventhen called Janetravels to Chicago to meet Eight, who leads a group of vigilante outcasts. They resemble a blend of X-Men and a street gang. Eleven stays with them to enact justice on wrongdoers, but eventually, their paths diverge when Eights group escapes the authorities while Eleven returns home.
The last we saw of Eight, she was in the back of a getaway van, tears streaming down her face as she parted from those who understood her. Due to the unpopularity of "The Lost Sister," many fans had forgotten about Eight and Elevens Chicago adventure, which feels almost surreal considering what comes later in the series.
Despite the episodes mixed reception, the Duffer Brothers have brought Eight back, reconnecting a storyline left unresolved since season 2. Her current role and how she became entangled with the U.S. military will be revealed when the show continues on Christmas Day.
Revisiting "The Lost Sister" and Eight's Return in Stranger Things Season 5
The return of Eight in Stranger Things season 5, after a long hiatus since her controversial appearance in season 2, brings an unexpected but intriguing connection to the show's larger narrative. Eight, or Kali Prasad, first appeared in "The Lost Sister" episode of season 2, a chapter that divided fans and critics alike. The episode was widely criticized for its shift in tone and pacing, which detracted from the main plotline. Despite this, the Duffer Brothers have now reintroduced the character in season 5, signaling that the unresolved storylines of Hawkins Lab and the characters connected to it remain integral to the ongoing mystery.
Eight's abilities, particularly her power to create mental illusions and render herself invisible, set her apart from Eleven and Vecna, creating a unique layer in the show's exploration of psychic powers. However, her storyline, marked by her time with a gang of outcasts, was seen as a detour from the main narrative. This diversion left many fans wondering whether Eight’s character would ever return to influence the larger battle against the Upside Down.
In the latest season, the decision to bring back Eight suggests that the Duffer Brothers believe there is more to her story and that the narrative threads woven in "The Lost Sister" were not as irrelevant as they seemed. Her role in season 5, particularly her connection to the U.S. military, hints at an important reveal in future episodes. This narrative development could provide crucial insights into the origin of the Upside Down, the government’s involvement, and how these characters' pasts will shape the ultimate battle for Hawkins.
While "The Lost Sister" may have left many fans cold, the return of Eight in season 5 offers a chance for redemption, not just for her character but for the episode itself. It serves as a reminder that Stranger Things is a show unafraid to revisit its more divisive moments, potentially turning them into key pieces of the puzzle that will bring the story full circle.
