Josh Brolin has shared insights into his earlier friendship with Donald Trump and how his perspective on the former President has evolved over the years. The actor detailed their initial connection, Trumps political ambitions, and how public perception has changed.
Early Connection and Friendship
Currently promoting his new film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Brolin recently recounted his history with Trump. Their paths first crossed while filming Oliver Stones 2010 movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. At that time, Trump was mainly known as a New York real estate tycoon and television personality. This professional encounter developed into a genuine friendship, allowing Brolin an insiders view of Trumps world long before he assumed the presidency.
Shifting Perspective
Brolin now sees his former friend in a very different light. He described Trumps current approach as power unmitigated and unregulated, contrasting sharply with the businessman he once knew. While acknowledging potential past corruption in Trumps business activities, Brolin expressed admiration for Trumps boldness, particularly his decision to build a luxury hotel in what Brolin referred to as 1970s New Yorks cesspool city. Thats interesting to me, he told The Independent.
Thoughts on a Potential Third Term
Brolin candidly addressed the idea of Trump pursuing a third term, which the former President has frequently hinted at despite constitutional constraints. Im not scared of Trump, because even though he says hes staying forever, its just not going to happen, Brolin said. And if it does, then Ill deal with that moment. But having been a friend of Trump before he was president, I know a different guy.
Trumps Enduring Popularity
The actor also analyzed why Trump continues to resonate with many Americans, attributing it primarily to marketing skill rather than policy or charisma. There is no greater genius than him in marketing, Brolin remarked. He takes the weakness of the general population and fills it. Thats why a lot of people feel they have a mascot in him. Its less about Trump himself and more about the general population and their need for validation.
Upcoming Project
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set to premiere on Netflix on December 12.
Author’s Commentary: Josh Brolin Reflects on Trump Friendship
Josh Brolin’s reflections offer a rare, personal glimpse into Donald Trump before his presidency. The actor recalls their initial connection during the filming of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, when Trump was primarily known as a real estate magnate and TV personality. Their friendship provided Brolin with an early insider view of Trump’s ambitions and mindset.
Brolin notes a significant evolution in his perception. He describes Trump’s current approach as “power unmitigated” and “unregulated,” contrasting sharply with the businessman he knew in the 2010s. While acknowledging past controversies, Brolin still admires Trump’s boldness, particularly in undertaking ambitious projects in challenging circumstances, like building a luxury hotel in 1970s New York.
On the topic of a potential third term, Brolin remains pragmatic. He expresses no fear of Trump’s political persistence, emphasizing that his personal knowledge of the man differs from public perception. This perspective underlines the complexity of judging public figures solely through their media portrayal.
Finally, Brolin highlights Trump’s enduring popularity as a product of marketing skill rather than policy. He suggests that Trump’s resonance with many Americans stems from fulfilling a psychological need for validation, making him a symbol rather than just a politician. This insight contextualizes Trump’s continued influence and the loyalty of his supporters.
