American lifestyle icon Martha Stewart is taking the spotlight in American Eagles newest denim campaign, replacing Sydney Sweeney. The star appears in the brands seasonal advertisements dressed entirely in denim, accented with diamonds, as part of the Give Great Jeans holiday initiative.
Stewart shared with People magazine that she found the concept delightful. I have spent decades helping people craft memorable holidays from arranging the perfect table to trimming the tree and finding that last-minute gift that makes all the difference, she explained. When American Eagle invited me to join their holiday gifting campaign, I was instantly intrigued.
She added, The idea of a denim-themed world was playful, clever, and whimsical: a complete gift-wrapping workshop made entirely of denim, including bows, garlands, and wrapping paper.
Following the announcement of Stewarts collaboration, American Eagles stock rose by 4% on Tuesday, according to New York Post. The campaign emphasizes denim as a universally appreciated and practical gift.
Holidays are about thoughtful presents, Stewart said in a press release. Ive always believed that nothing is more useful or universally loved than a pair of jeans. If you want to give a gift that will be worn, cherished, and remembered long after the wrapping paper is gone, American Eagle jeans are the perfect choice.
Previously, Sydney Sweeneys own campaign with the brand faced criticism for a tagline that some perceived as racially insensitive. The ad featured Sweeney in head-to-toe denim beside a billboard reading Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes, with genes crossed out and replaced with jeans. Sweeney later explained she never issued a public defense, stating she simply loves jeans and wears them every day.
Commentary: The Strategic Move Behind Martha Stewart's Collaboration with American Eagle
The recent announcement of Martha Stewart replacing Sydney Sweeney in American Eagle’s latest holiday campaign is more than just a celebrity endorsement—it's a calculated move that taps into a broader cultural and business narrative. Stewart, a long-established symbol of elegance, style, and holiday spirit, aligns perfectly with the brand’s aim of making denim a staple holiday gift. Her endorsement promises not only to enhance the appeal of American Eagle’s products but also to reshape the brand’s holiday image.
American Eagle’s decision to feature Stewart underscores the company’s commitment to inclusivity and timeless style. With denim being a universally loved and practical gift, Stewart’s seasoned holiday expertise serves as a perfect complement to the campaign’s messaging. By positioning the brand as a go-to for meaningful, long-lasting gifts, American Eagle has effectively shifted the focus from mere fashion to the sentiment behind the gifts themselves.
Moreover, the brand is capitalizing on Stewart’s credibility in the holiday space, an area where she has built a strong legacy. Unlike previous campaigns that may have faced controversies, like Sweeney’s infamous “Great Genes” ad, this campaign promotes a wholesome and celebratory tone, steering clear of potential backlash. It’s a reminder of how brands carefully craft their messaging to avoid mistakes and foster positive associations during key retail seasons.
The response from investors reflects this strategic pivot. A reported 4% increase in American Eagle’s stock following the announcement points to a positive reception, indicating that the collaboration is likely to benefit the brand both financially and in terms of public perception. This campaign is more than just an ad—it's a clear statement about American Eagle’s future direction in the highly competitive retail market.
