Michael B. Jordan Teases His First Ever 'Reimagination' of "Thomas Crown Affair" and Shares Why It Feels 'Personal'

Michael B. Jordan is offering a glimpse into his next project: a fresh interpretation of The Thomas Crown Affair. The actor and director will both star in and helm the heist movie, set to premiere in spring 2027.

Speaking on the November 28 episode of Varietys Awards Circuit podcast, Jordan, 38, described the film as more intimate with heightened stakes. This ones a bit more personal and the stakes are a lot higher, he explained.

The story revolves around a wealthy figure, Thomas Crown, who orchestrates crimes for the thrill and later becomes entangled with an insurance investigator. The original 1968 version featured Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, while the 1999 remake starred Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, the latter leaving a lasting impression on Jordan. The Brosnan version was the one I grew up watching, and I was like, Oh man, this is great, I love this, he shared. I was like 13, 14. The romantic angle went over my head, but the artistry and elegance struck me. I didnt visit many museums growing up, but that movie gave me a glimpse of New York I hadnt seen before.

Jordan credits his early exposure to art to his mother, an artist, saying, I grew up around paints, canvases, upholstery, and leather dyeing So I had a love and appreciation for an artists journey before I even became one myself.

After making his directorial debut with Creed III in 2023, Jordan pitched a reimagined Thomas Crown Affair to Amazon MGM Studios. Filmed in London, the release is scheduled for March 5, 2027. I didnt want it to be a straight reboot or remake, Jordan explained. I wanted to reimagine it. The story had enough distance between generations to explore it anew.

The cast includes Ruth Negga, Aubrey Plaza, Kenneth Branagh, and Lily Gladstone. Jordan aims to shift audience expectations: The first two films centered on rich White men committing crimes out of boredom this version is more personal, and the stakes are higher.

Jordan also reflected on his work with Ryan Coogler on the horror film Sinners, highlighting their strong creative partnership. He described the project as inspired by Cooglers relationship with his uncle James and his connection to blues music. Playing twin brothers in Sinners, Jordan called his Thomas Crown project the second hardest thing Ive ever done, outside of this performance in Sinners and it was worth it.

He concluded by acknowledging the dedication of the cast and crew: I want everyone who set aside time from their families to be part of this project to receive all the love, respect, and recognition they deserve.
