Netflix experienced a temporary outage at 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, coinciding with the highly anticipated premiere of the fifth season of the hit sci-fi series Stranger Things.

The streaming service was unavailable for roughly three minutes, and some users still report minor glitches. Many fans attempting to watch the new episodes were greeted with an image from Nailed It! displaying the message: Something went wrong. Sorry, were having trouble with your request. Youll find lots to explore on the home page.

By 5:05 p.m., Netflix appeared to be functioning normally for most viewers. Variety has contacted the platform for comment regarding the outage.

This is not the first time Stranger Things has caused Netflix to struggle under heavy traffic. In July 2022, the platform briefly went down when the final two episodes of Season 4 were released. Outages have also occurred during high-profile events, such as the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight, one of Netflixs first live-streamed events.

The new season of Stranger Things arrives more than three years after the Season 4 finale. The storyline follows the Hawkins children as they attempt to defeat the monstrous Vecna while the town remains under military quarantine, and Eleven stays hidden from authorities.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the series stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Cara Buono, Priah Ferguson, Eduardo Franco, Brett Gelman, Dacre Montgomery, Matthew Modine, Paul Reiser, Jamie Campbell Bower, Grace Van Dien, Robert Englund, Tyner Rushing, and Raphael Luce.

Stranger Things continues to rank among Netflixs most-watched series ever.

Author's Comment: A Brief Look at Netflix's Recent Outage

The temporary outage that Netflix experienced on Wednesday evening during the premiere of the fifth season of Stranger Things highlights an ongoing challenge for the streaming giant. For roughly three minutes, users were unable to access the platform, coinciding with the highly anticipated release of new episodes. While the issue was quickly resolved, some minor glitches continued to affect a portion of users.

This isn't the first time Netflix has struggled to handle the traffic generated by high-profile events. In fact, outages have occurred during several major premieres, including the finale of Stranger Things' fourth season and live-streamed events like the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight. It is clear that while Netflix has grown significantly, its infrastructure is still sometimes tested during key moments of heightened demand.

The question remains whether Netflix will be able to prevent future interruptions during such critical moments, especially with global fandoms now expecting flawless streaming experiences. With Stranger Things being one of the platform’s most popular series, its fans certainly deserve better reliability during these peak moments.
