Oscar-Winning Designer Paul Tazewell Joins Indonesian Biopic 'Rose Pandanwangi'

Paul Tazewell, the Academy Award-winning costume designer known for Wicked, has become part of the creative team for Rose Pandanwangi, an Indonesia-Philippines co-production focusing on the celebrated seriosa singer Rose Pandanwangi, according to filmmakers speaking with Variety. The film is directed by Razka Robby Ertanto, who previously helmed Yohanna, and produced by Chelsea Islan, Ertanto, and Kristine de Leon under the Summerland banner. The project has been selected for the JAFF Future Project at this years Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) Market in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Tazewells participation is considered a major asset for the biographical drama, bringing his award-winning costume expertise to a story spanning post-war Indonesia and the Netherlands. He previously won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked.

Set in post-war Indonesia, Rose Pandanwangi tells the story of the titular seriosa singer, whose life mirrored the nations turbulent transformation. Born in wartime Makassar, Roses powerful voice moved soldiers to tears. She navigated shifting empires and expectations, eventually returning from exile in Rotterdam to Jakarta, determined to pursue her dream. The film portrays her journey from factory worker to national icon, balancing motherhood with ambition.

As her career blossomed, Rose faced personal challenges, including the quiet disintegration of her marriage. Within Jakartas postwar art scene, she formed a connection with painter Sudjojono, whose devotion to truth and freedom reinvigorated her own spirit. During the anti-communist purge, when Sudjojono disappeared, Rose confronted a society where voices like hers were often silenced.

Director Ertanto describes the project as deeply personal: Her voice pierced through time, but her story was left behind in history. Seriosa music, Indonesias adaptation of Western art song, profoundly influenced his artistic perspective. Introduced by the Dutch via German Lieder in the 16th century, seriosa evolved into a sophisticated form blending Western vocal technique with Indonesian language, values, and nationalism. In the 1940s, Rose Pandanwangi emerged as a leading figure in the genre, exemplifying both technical mastery and cultural pride.

Ernantos inspiration began after visiting a Sudjojono painting exhibition. The artists evocative portrayals of women captured his attention, but it was Rose Pandanwangi, repeatedly featured in the paintings, who sparked his desire to tell her story. In her gaze, I sensed a story waiting to be told. That was the moment I knew I had to make this film, he explains.

Producer Kristine de Leon, who met Ertanto at Cannes, was drawn to his dedication and precision. He is a meticulous director with a deep love for Southeast Asian history and a genuine commitment to telling womens stories with nuance and care, she says. As a Filipina producer and mother, de Leon also felt a personal connection to Rose as a woman balancing artistic ambition with personal responsibility.

Rose Pandanwangi is more than a biopic of an iconic Indonesian seriosa singer; it is an intimate portrait of a woman who refused to be silenced by war, patriarchy, displacement, or politics, de Leon adds. The story follows Rose across continents and decades, from Japanese-occupied Indonesia to post-war Europe and back to her homeland where she became a national icon.

The project is currently in development. The JAFF Future Project serves as both a development platform and a co-production hub, supporting independent works toward completion and distribution. This year, the initiative runs from November 29 to December 1 at the Jogja Expo Center, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival.
