'Stranger Things' actor Joe Keery explains why he officiated wedding as Steve

Recently, a video circulated online showing "Stranger Things" actor Joe Keery dressed as his beloved character, Steve Harrington, not on set but officiating a real wedding. The 33-year-old shared details on The Tonight Show on November 27, explaining why he wore the iconic Scoops Ahoy ice cream uniform from Season 3 for his friends California wedding.

Keery, who also performs as indie artist Djo, revealed that friends Matt and Veronica tied the knot while he was touring, and they suggested he attend in character. "Veronica said, 'Its a costume wedding, its Halloween. You should go as Steve,'" Keery told Jimmy Fallon. He noted that the celebration was filled with creative outfits, from Shrek to the Riddler, making it a true costume event.

Contrary to online speculation, Keery confirmed that the actual costume came from "Stranger Things" costume designer Amy Parris. "It was a little tighter this time; the shorts didnt fit the same," he admitted with a laugh.

On November 6, 2025, the "Stranger Things" cast walked the final red carpet for Season 5 at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood, California. Fans were treated to the premiere of the first four episodes, with the remaining three set to drop on Netflix on Christmas Day. The series finale will conclude on New Years Eve, also hitting theaters.

After the premiere, cast members including Jamie Campbell Bower, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, and Finn Wolfhard attended a For Your Consideration event at Netflixs Tudum Theater on November 8.

Keery also reminisced about discussions with "Stranger Things" creators Matt and Ross Duffer regarding the Scoops Ahoy uniform. He had suggested modifying the outfit during action sequences in Season 3, but the Duffer Brothers insisted it remain intact, preserving its signature look. Although the uniform didnt return in later seasons, Keery and Maya Hawke reprised their characters in Seasons 4 and 5.

Fans can enjoy the final episodes in "Volume 2" on Christmas and the series conclusion on New Years Eve, marking the end of a decade-long adventure filled with Demogorgons, Mind Flayers, Eggos, and unforgettable first loves.
