With Stranger Things season 5 arriving on Netflix very soon, fans who havent yet rewatched the series can relax. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have shared that only four key episodes are crucial for catching up before the final season begins.
In a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffers recommended specific episodes from previous seasons to help viewers prepare for Season 5 Volume 1:
- Season 2, Episode 4: This episode follows Will Byers as he deepens his connection with the Shadow Monster, eventually mapping out the Upside Down through his visions.
- Season 2, Episode 6: Will becomes a spy for the Mind Flayer, leading a team of scientists into a trap. According to Matt Duffer, "Season two is when we really started to build out the mythology... Thats where we planted the seeds for the larger story."
- Season 4, Episode 7 "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab": The episode revisits past events where One (Henry Creel) manipulates Eleven to open the gate to the Upside Down. He then kills everyone at the lab, escapes, and transforms into Vecna. Ross Duffer explained, "That episode starts revealing some of the Upside Down mythology and provides answers that continue to resonate in season five."
- Season 4, Episode 9: Serving as the season finale, this episode sets the stage for season 5. Hawkins remains in turmoil with a military lockdown and the Upside Down gate still open. Maxs condition as a coma patient also adds to the tension.
For those with extra time, a guide is available highlighting eight additional episodes rich in lore that are worth revisiting before the new season.
Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 premieres on Netflix on November 26. Fans can check the full release schedule for exact times and explore curated lists of the best Netflix shows to watch.
Author’s Analysis: Key Episodes Before Stranger Things Season 5
As the countdown to Stranger Things Season 5 continues, it’s clear that not every episode from the previous seasons is essential for viewers preparing for the finale. According to creators Matt and Ross Duffer, only four episodes are critical for understanding the central storylines and character developments leading into the new season.
The recommended episodes span Season 2 and Season 4. Season 2, Episodes 4 and 6, focus on Will Byers’ connection with the Shadow Monster and the emergence of the Mind Flayer, establishing the deeper mythology that underpins the series. Season 4, Episodes 7 and 9, depict the rise of Vecna and the ongoing chaos in Hawkins, directly setting up the conflicts and stakes for Season 5.
This selective approach highlights the creators’ intent to streamline the viewing experience. While a full rewatch remains valuable for fans who want richer context, focusing on these key episodes ensures that viewers are up to speed on the essential plot points without committing to every previous installment.
With Season 5 Volume 1 premiering on Netflix on November 26, fans can follow the Duffers’ guidance to quickly reconnect with the narrative and prepare for the new twists and revelations awaiting in Hawkins and the Upside Down.
