In the spring of 1980, Bob Marley launched a tour promoting his Uprising album with the Wailers, signaling a new chapter for the reggae icon. The album's cover showed a muscular Marley reaching skyward, while tracks like Could You Be Loved were gaining traction in both European clubs and American dance floorsa rare feat for him.
For his debut performance in Italy, Marley performed in a stadium accommodating over 100,000 fans. In the U.S., he co-headlined two nights at Madison Square Garden alongside the Commodores, introducing his music to a broader Black audience.
The Wailers were in top form, featuring guitarists Al Anderson and Junior Marvin, keyboardists Tyrone Downie and Earl Wya Lindo, bassist Aston Family Man Barrett, drummer Carlton Barrett, and the I-ThreesRita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, and Judy Mowattwhose harmonies enriched Marleys songs. Marley also maintained rigorous physical preparation. We trained before tours to keep up cardio because we were on the move constantly, Anderson told Rolling Stone. On stage, he never stopped moving.
Despite the tours significance, it became Marleys final set of concerts. Anderson recalled, He was responsible for everything financially and spiritually and put his heart into that tour. The band was firing on all cylinderseverything was working fine, up until a point.
The tour began in Zurich, Switzerland, in late May and continued across Europe until late July. The Italian show drew over 120,000 attendees, some holding banners reading, Thank You, Bob Marley. When the tour reached the U.S. in mid-September, Bostons opening night was delayed due to a massive crowd and security concerns. Marleys message to the audience remained: Take it easy take it good.
The concerts, beginning with the I-Threes set, often stretched to two hours. Marley would enter the stage after a chant led by Downie, occasionally wearing a shirt in Jamaicas colors. The shows spanned his career, featuring hits like I Shot the Sheriff, No Woman, No Cry, Burnin and Lootin, and Zimbabwe. For the first time, audiences heard Redemption Song live, with Marley performing solo on acoustic guitar, creating an intimate moment distinct from his usual high-energy performances.
Anderson and Marvins guitars energized the music, while Downie and Lindos keyboards provided rhythmic depth, notably on tracks like Exodus and Zion Train. Yet, Marleys lyrics in Running AwayYou running, you running/But you cant run from yourselfforeshadowed the personal battle ahead. Three years earlier, he had been diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), a rare and aggressive cancer, which began affecting him during the tour.
In New York, while preparing for the Commodores shows, Marley collapsed jogging in Central Park, a sign of the tumors effects. Despite his declining health, he insisted on performing, including a final show at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh on September 30. Although visibly frail, he completed the concert, later released posthumously as Live Forever. Anderson noted, Pittsburgh was on fire. You couldnt even tell something was wrong with him.
Rita Marley, unaware of his collapse in New York, demanded the remaining tour be canceled. The public was told the postponement was due to exhaustion. Marley was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, confirming the cancer had spread to his liver, lungs, and brain. True to his Rastafarian faith, he refused surgery, pursuing treatment across New York, Mexico, Miami, and Germany. Anderson described him as a wounded lion who never gave up.
As Marleys condition worsened, he requested to return to Jamaica. Tragically, he passed away on May 11, 1981, in Miami at just 36. Reflecting on his legacy before hospitalization, Marley recognized the lasting impact of reggae: As time goes on, people find out that this is for real.
