December event planned to honor country music legend fighting stage 4 cancer

As Raul Malo faces a fight against stage 4 cancer, both his bandmates and the broader country music community are coming together to honor his career with a special two-night event celebrating 35 years of his musical journey. The Mavericks shared the announcement on Instagram.

We are excited to present Dance The Night Away: A 35-Year Musical Tribute Celebrating The Mavericks & Honoring Raul Malo, taking place December 5-6 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, the band stated. These evenings will pay tribute to Raul and the band's decades-long impact on American and Latin music, featuring guest artists performing beloved songs from The Mavericks extensive catalog.

The lineup of performers includes Jamy Johnson, Marty Stuart, Steve Earle, Chuck Mead, Cimafunk, Emily West, Hector Tellez Jr., Jaime Hana, JD McPherson, James Otto, Jim Lauderdale, Jese Dayton, Jimmie Vaughan, Joshua Ray Walker, Maggie Rose, Mandy Barnett, Nicole Atkins, Waylon Payne, Sweet Lizzy Project, Wade Hayes, Seth Walker, Nikkie Lane, Patty Griffin, and Ray Benson.

Although Raul will not be performing, he will be present and celebrated throughout both nights, the band added. These shows will replace our previously scheduled Ryman performances. All existing tickets remain valid, and no additional tickets are required. We cant wait to celebrate music, memories, and Raul Malos extraordinary legacy this December.

Raul Malo expressed his anticipation for the tribute, telling Taste of Country, Im really looking forward to these two nights at the Ryman. The incredible support from fellow musicians, fans, and loved ones will make these evenings truly special.

Malo has openly shared his health struggles with fans, and in September he revealed he is also battling Leptomeningeal Disease (LMD). He posted on Facebook:

Dear Friends, I want to update you all on my health. Things have taken a turn. Ive developed LMD, and treatment will begin with radiation tomorrow, followed by potential chemotherapy and alternative therapies. Im taking to heart advice to rest and recover.

He also explained the impact on his schedule: All future shows are cancelled, but we will continue releasing projects, live recordings, and merchandise. Thank you to Dwight Yoakam, his band, and crew for their understanding this year. Please hold onto your tickets for the Ryman in December, as something special is planned.

Malo reassured fans about his wellbeing, saying, I am not alone or scared. I have an amazing family, team, band, friends, and fans. Your love, prayers, and messages mean the world to me, and Ive read every single one.
