Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi reached out for guidance on grandparenting after his son, Jake Bongiovi, and actress Millie Bobby Brown welcomed a baby girl through adoption. Speaking on the CBeebies Parenting Helpline podcast, the 63-year-old musician asked expert Philippa about the right moments to offer parenting advice: "When can I give my child advice on how to parent and when should I butt out?"

Philippa responded with practical advice: "Offer guidance only when it is requested, and otherwise, step back. 'Butt out' probably just means stay quiet the rest of the time."

Bon Jovi also shared the best advice hes received about grandparenting: The most valuable lesson so far is knowing when to stay silent, recognizing that children will find their own way as parents. Theres no manual for when they bring a baby home and we leave that first night. He continued, I learned this through experience. Our children will develop their own parenting style, and we navigate it together. Im excited to watch them become parents and to welcome our grandchildren into our lives.

Earlier in August, Brown, 21, and Bongiovi, 23, announced on Instagram that they had adopted a daughter over the summer, stating, We are thrilled to begin this next chapter of parenthood in peace and privacy. The couple, who married in May 2024, have not revealed their daughters name.

In related family news, Bon Jovis other son, Jesse Bongiovi, 30, and his wife Jesse Light welcomed a baby girl, Blair Lucy Bongiovi, in early November 2025. Jon and his wife, Dorothea Bongiovi, also have two other children, Stephanie, 32, and Romeo, 21.

Commentary: A New Chapter in the Bon Jovi Family

Jon Bon Jovi's recent comments about grandparenting provide a rare glimpse into his personal life, reflecting the evolution of family dynamics in the modern world. As his son Jake Bongiovi and actress Millie Bobby Brown embrace parenthood through adoption, the veteran rocker is seeking guidance on his new role as a grandparent. His candid question to parenting expert Philippa highlights a common dilemma for grandparents: knowing when to step in and when to stay quiet.

The advice Jon received—“Offer guidance only when it is requested”—is a reminder that parental and grandparental roles can sometimes overlap, but boundaries should be respected. While many grandparents may feel compelled to offer advice, Jon’s reflection suggests a balanced approach is best. By recognizing that his children will forge their own path in parenting, Jon embraces the idea of support over interference. This level of self-awareness is commendable, especially when navigating the complex and sometimes fraught relationships between generations.

Moreover, his perspective on grandparenting emphasizes the joy of watching children grow into parents themselves. His acknowledgment that there is no manual for the experience reflects the unpredictability of life’s milestones. It’s clear that Jon is excited to be part of this new phase in his family’s life, while understanding that each generation’s journey is unique.

The recent addition of a granddaughter through adoption by Jake and Millie further deepens the family’s sense of unity. The couple’s decision to adopt, along with their wish for privacy, reflects the contemporary values of peace and discretion that are increasingly important for many families in the public eye. With other recent family milestones, including the birth of his second granddaughter, Jon's life as a grandfather is just beginning to take shape—and it’s clear he’s ready for the ride.
