1985 was a whirlwind year for Queen. The iconic British rock band began the year performing for a record-breaking crowd at Brazils first Rock in Rio festival, followed by an exhaustive world tour, their legendary Live Aid performance, and the release of the hit single One Vision. Amid all this, Freddie Mercury embarked on a solo journey that often goes underappreciated: the release of his only solo album, Mr Bad Guy, along with its four promotional singles.
The album explored diverse musical landscapes, from disco and reggae to proto-house and grand orchestral compositions, representing Mercurys attempt at a mainstream pop record in the vein of Michael Jacksons Thriller. There were many musical directions I wanted to pursue that werent possible within Queen, Mercury explained. He viewed Mr Bad Guy as a pure reflection of his own pop sensibilities, capturing the spectrum of his life.
Commercially, the album didnt meet expectations. It peaked at number six in the UK and lingered in the Top 40 for only 10 weeks, while in the US it reached just number 159. There was no solo phenomenon comparable to Jacksons success. However, with the 40th anniversary vinyl re-release, Mr Bad Guy feels remarkably vibrant and forward-thinking, standing out as a snapshot of Mercurys unfiltered artistry.
Queen drummer Roger Taylor recalls supporting Mercury throughout the solo project. I went to Munich a few times to offer suggestions and moral support, Taylor said. He notes that while the musical directions on Mr Bad Guy were new in presentation, Queen had already experimented with synthesizers and disco-pop, making the album an extension of Mercurys creativity rather than a stark departure.
The tracks on Mr Bad Guy are strikingly varied. Opening with the samba-infused disco of Lets Turn It On, followed by the proto-house Man Made Paradise, and reggae-rock hybrid My Love Is Dangerous, the album defies easy categorization. The title track features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and a tuba bassline, a bold orchestral statement Mercury proudly claimed as a first for a pop artist.
Producer and longtime Queen collaborator Justin Shirley-Smith oversaw the remix for the anniversary edition, ensuring fidelity to Mercurys original vision. Mercury had also planned to collaborate with Michael Jackson, recording skeletal tracks including There Must Be More To Life Than This, though conflicting schedules and eccentric studio incidents left the songs incomplete. The duet with Jackson never materialized, while other collaborative tracks appeared elsewhere with different vocal arrangements.
Timing also hindered the albums commercial success. Released amidst Queens demanding 1985 schedule, including their Asia and Australasia tour and Live Aid performance, promotion was limited. Taylor recalls the band being at a low ebb from exhaustion, which further impacted the albums reach.
Despite these setbacks, Mercurys solo work eventually gained recognition. Living on My Own became a dance hit in 1993, while tracks like Made in Heaven and I Was Born to Love You were revisited on the posthumous Queen album Made in Heaven. There Must Be More To Life Than This later appeared on the 2014 compilation Queen Forever with Jacksons vocals restored.
More than just a collection of songs, Mr Bad Guy hints at the paths Mercury might have explored had he lived longer. Operatic tracks foreshadow his collaboration with Montserrat Caball on Barcelona, while songs like Man Made Paradise suggest potential chart-friendly club music explorations. Ballads such as Love Me Like Theres No Tomorrow prefigure the emotive torch songs embraced by later artists, and Lets Turn It On remains an audacious, untapped dance-floor anthem.
The album demonstrated Mercurys limitless creativity, Shirley-Smith notes. He proved he could achieve anything he wanted, and would have continued to do so.
The Mr Bad Guy 40th Anniversary Special Edition Vinyl Reissue is available from December 5 via Universal.
