The Trump administrations military actions in Iran triggered unprecedented spending with over five billion dollars on munitions alone in the first two days raising questions about oversight and the rising costs of rapid military escalation.
The U.S. military's expenses for the initial phase of the Trump administration's military actions in Iran have been shockingly high, with reports indicating that over $5.6 billion was spent on munitions alone during the first two days of operations. According to three U.S. officials speaking to The Washington Post, this expenditure occurred without any congressional approval, highlighting the rapid escalation and financial scale of the operation.
Exceeding Initial Estimates
The $5.6 billion spent during the initial two-day period greatly surpassed the Pentagon's early daily cost projections, which had estimated around $1 billion per day. Some Republican lawmakers reportedly received alternative estimates that suggested the daily cost could approach $2 billion. This revelation came just as Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the military operations were set to intensify, with Tuesday being marked as the most aggressive day of strikes, hours after President Trump had declared the campaign "very complete."
Scale of Military Operations
The Pentagon's officials did not specify the exact types of munitions used in the early stages of the military campaign. However, U.S. Central Command confirmed that over 2,000 munitions were launched, and more than 5,000 targets were struck in the opening phase. Among the munitions used were precision-guided weapons such as Tomahawk cruise missiles, which cost approximately $2.2 million each. Reports suggest that one of these missiles may have struck a girls' primary school, leading to the deaths of 175 people, including numerous children.
Additional Military Costs
In addition to the costs of the munitions themselves, the Center for American Progress has estimated that assembling the largest U.S. military force in the Middle East in decades cost around $630 million before any combat operations began. Furthermore, a friendly fire incident early in the campaign resulted in the loss of three F-15 fighter jets, incurring an additional cost of approximately $351 million.
Shifts in Weapon Strategy
Despite the high costs associated with precision-guided weapons, Secretary Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine indicated last week that the U.S. military would shift to using more cost-effective laser-guided bombs. While this adjustment may help reduce some costs, the overall expense to U.S. taxpayers is expected to continue rising as the conflict drags on.
Future Budget Implications
The Trump administration is anticipated to request a supplemental defense budget in the near future to cover the growing expenses of the ongoing bombing campaign in Iran. This request is expected to ask for billions of additional dollars, further emphasizing the financial burden that the military operations are placing on the federal budget.
Summary of Financial Impact
- Munitions spent in the first two days: $5.6 billion
- Initial Pentagon estimate per day: $1 billion
- Alternate GOP estimate: $2 billion per day
- Cost to assemble military forces: $630 million
- Loss of three F-15 jets: $351 million
- Cost of each Tomahawk missile: $2.2 million
The ongoing U.S. military campaign in Iran underscores both the significant costs of modern warfare and the rapid escalation of financial expenditures when operations are conducted without congressional oversight. Analysts predict that the total costs will continue to rise as the use of precision-guided munitions is supplemented by additional military strategies and assets.
