Voters in Texass 22nd District may not have to adjust to a completely new representative after all. Republican Congressman Troy Nehls has announced he will not seek reelection, and his identical twin, Trevor Nehls, is running to succeed him now with an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
It is my honor to support MAGA Warrior Trevor Nehls as he campaigns to represent the outstanding people of Texas 22nd District, Trump wrote on Truth Social, praising both brothers as dedicated champions of the MAGA movement.
Troy Nehls, who previously served as Fort Bend County sheriff, has represented the conservative district southwest of Houston since 2021. He revealed last week that he will retire at the end of his third term in January 2027, endorsing his twin as his successor.
I trust him completely and know he will fight every day for this district, Troy stated on Facebook. Hes ready to hit the ground running.
Trevor Nehls, in announcing his campaign, vowed to continue his brothers pro-Trump policies if elected. District 22 needs a representative who will stand alongside President Trump, defend conservative values, secure our borders, protect families, and resist the radical agenda of the Democrats. I am prepared to take up that mission, he wrote on social media.
During Troy Nehls time in Congress, he became known as one of Trumps most loyal supporters. This year, he co-sponsored legislation to replace Benjamin Franklin on the $100 bill with Trump, wore a Trump-themed outfit to President Bidens final State of the Union, and campaigned for Trump in front of a large inflatable of the former president during the 2024 election.
Troy has said he personally informed Trump of his retirement plans before making a public announcement.
Trevor has previously sought public office, including a run for Fort Bend County sheriff after Troy vacated the post, but lost to Democrat Eric Fagan. His family ties and Trumps backing are expected to give him an advantage in a district Troy won by over 25 points in 2024, though the Republican primary could still prove competitive. Former state legislator Jacey Jetton has already entered the race, while rumors of a run by Pierce Bush, grandson of former President George H.W. Bush, have been dismissed as he confirmed he will not run.
Analysis: Political Continuity in Texas’s 22nd District
The announcement that Troy Nehls will retire and endorse his twin, Trevor Nehls, signals a strong likelihood of continuity in representation for Texas’s 22nd District. Trevor’s campaign, backed by former President Donald Trump, emphasizes the continuation of his brother’s pro-Trump, conservative agenda, including border security, family protections, and opposition to Democratic policies.
Troy Nehls’ tenure established him as a loyal MAGA supporter, evidenced by his high-profile legislative and symbolic actions in support of Trump. Trevor’s candidacy leverages both name recognition and party endorsement, providing a substantial advantage in a district that delivered a 25-point Republican victory in 2024.
Despite these advantages, the Republican primary is not guaranteed to be smooth. Former state legislator Jacey Jetton’s entry introduces potential competition, though other rumored candidates, such as Pierce Bush, have confirmed they will not run. The race will test whether the Nehls name and Trump endorsement can consolidate conservative support in a still-vibrant primary contest.
