LOS ANGELES Changes to California's congressional districts aimed at favoring Democrats have placed Republicans in a difficult position. While some are preparing for competitive races, one congressman is weighing a bold option: moving to Texas.
Rep. Darrell Issa, known for his wealth from the car alarm industry, is contemplating a move from California to Texas in hopes of extending his 25-year tenure in Congress. A source familiar with his deliberations, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed the possibility.
This scenario highlights a broader trend of politicians seeking more favorable districts after redistricting. The situation illustrates the stark contrast in strategies between states: Texas is reshaping districts to benefit Republicans, while California is enhancing Democratic prospects, reflecting nationwide gerrymandering battles ahead of the next midterms.
Issa has previously shifted districts, moving from a Democratic-leaning coastal area to a more Republican inland district east of San Diego. His current district, however, now includes Palm Springs, a Democratic stronghold, after the passage of Proposition 50, complicating his reelection prospects.
Uncertainty remains as courts review new congressional maps across the country. The Supreme Court is considering whether to uphold a ruling that blocks Texas districts approved by Republican officials. With the Texas filing deadline approaching Monday, Issa must decide whether to leave California for Texas.
Some Republicans have expressed skepticism about his potential move. Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, who leads the House GOP campaign committee, encouraged Issa to run in his current district. According to the source, Issa is carefully weighing his options, which include staying in California, running in another district, or not running at all.
Midterm elections historically challenge the party in the White House, and Republicans risk losing their slim House majority. If Issa relocates, he would join other Californians recently moving to Texas, attracted by affordability and political alignment.
The rivalry between California and Texas remains intense, with governors Gavin Newsom and Greg Abbott clashing over taxes, gun laws, and other policies. Merchandise like Don't California my Texas reflects the cultural tensions.
Issa is considering Texas 32nd District, northeast of Dallas. Liz Gover, a local Republican precinct chair, expressed support for Issas record but noted he does not reside in Texas and other candidates are running for the seat. She is backing Darrell Day, emphasizing the importance of local residency and familiarity with the state.
Day remarked, If California voters aren't going to vote for him, I dont know why Texas voters would. He added, If he's looking for an easy seat, he's looking in the wrong place. We look forward to defeating him.
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn has not contacted Issa but stated he is open to discussions, noting the influx of Californians relocating to Texas.
