Bondi, in a statement shared on social media, described her service in the administration as the "honor of a lifetime" and noted that she would transition to a prominent position in the private sector.

Recent Cabinet Changes

Bondi's exit marks the second Cabinet-level departure within a month. Earlier in March, Trump dismissed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing dissatisfaction with her management of the department, including concerns over spending and the oversight of a nationwide immigration enforcement initiative. Compared to his first term, the second term of Trump’s administration has seen fewer personnel changes. In 2017, national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned after only 24 days due to undisclosed communications with Russia's ambassador, prompting a wave of early resignations and firings including Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, strategist Steve Bannon, Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. During Trump's initial term, 14 Cabinet-level officials were replaced, the highest number since Ronald Reagan, according to the Brookings Institution. In contrast, President Joe Biden had only two Cabinet-level changes by the third year of his administration. Her notable actions included the dismissal of career DOJ prosecutors, removal of top FBI officials involved in the January 6, 2021 investigation, increased administrative oversight of election processes, and initiating investigations into perceived political adversaries, such as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, former FBI Director James Comey, and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Bondi also managed Epstein-related investigation files, including the partial release of millions of federal documents. Reports indicate that Trump’s frustrations with Bondi were linked to her handling of the Epstein files and her inability to secure indictments against political opponents. Following her departure, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will lead the DOJ, though it is uncertain if he will be nominated as a permanent successor.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security

Noem oversaw the administration's immigration agenda, managing raids, detentions, and deportations at a historic scale. Lindsey Halligan, appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia without prior prosecutorial experience, signed indictments against Comey and James that were later dismissed due to her unlawful appointment, leading to her resignation in January. Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned after seven months in protest of Trump’s military actions in Iran, expressing concerns about deploying U.S. troops and alleging influence from Israeli officials, which drew criticism from some Republicans over potential antisemitic implications.
