The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, requested the retirement of Admiral Alvin Holsey in October after the admiral raised questions regarding the legality of boat strikes conducted during the Trump administration in the Caribbean, according to a recent report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing two anonymous Pentagon officials, reported on Wednesday that Hegseths request was effectively a forced departure, resulting from months of tension between the Secretary and the admiral. The officials stated that Holsey had expressed doubts about the legal justification for lethal actions against vessels suspected of drug trafficking.
Shortly after the request, Hegseth announced that Holsey, who led the U.S. Southern Command, would be stepping down. Hegseth reportedly told Holsey, You either follow orders completely or you dont. When directives come, you act immediately without questioning.
The Pentagon sources indicated that Holsey was initially troubled by unclear legal authority surrounding the boat strikes and argued that some operations extended beyond his command. Hegseth, according to the report, also suspected Holsey of possibly leaking information to the press and had doubts about his reliability even before the missions commenced.
